Chapter 7 - The Patricia Casino Trail Exposed

By Wednesday evening, the investigation into Patricia’s financial activities—conducted by Denise’s forensic accounting team—yielded results that shocked even my father and me.

We were sitting around Dad’s kitchen table after Lily had gone to sleep. Spread across the butcher block were bank statements, wire transfer logs, and photographic evidence pulled from public and private databases.

Denise tapped a printed spreadsheet with the tip of her pen.

“Here is where every single dollar went,” Denise explained, pointing to a highlighted column of figures. “Over the past eighteen months, Derek funneled a total of $142,000 from your household accounts into three separate bank accounts controlled directly by Patricia.”

I stared at the numbers, my stomach turning. One hundred and forty-two thousand dollars. That was the equivalent of nearly four years of my hard work at the pharmacy—money that could have gone into Lily’s college fund, our home mortgage principal, or savings for our future.

Instead, where had it gone?

Denise flipped to the next page, revealing glossy color printouts.

“Patricia didn't just use that money to pay her mortgage,” Denise continued. “Look at these transaction logs from the Belterra Casino and Resort in Indiana, as well as several VIP high-roller lounges in downtown Chicago. She was playing high-stakes baccarat and blackjack four nights a week.”

The photographs showed Patricia sitting at a green-felt poker table, wearing a sparkling evening gown, holding a glass of champagne with a stack of purple high-value chips piled high in front of her. Another photo showed her stepping out of a private helicopter at a luxury resort.

“She was living like a high-society socialite on your pharmacy sweat,” Dad said, his voice dangerously low. He shook his head slowly. “And Derek was enabling her the whole time, covering for her addiction while his own six-year-old daughter ate dry cereal out of a plastic cup.”

“The legal implications here go far beyond a messy divorce,” Denise added, packing the documents back into her briefcase. “By systematically hiding marital assets to fund a third party’s illegal or destructive gambling habit, Derek has committed severe financial dissipation under Ohio domestic relations law. When we go back to court for the final settlement hearing next month, we aren't just asking for the house and custody—we are asking the judge to award Claire one hundred percent of the remaining marital assets, plus punitive damages.”

I looked at the photographs of Patricia, remembering how she used to look down her nose at me during family dinners, implying I wasn't good enough for her precious son.

“Can we subpoena the casino records for testimony?” I asked.

“Already done,” Denise smiled faintly. “The casino compliance officers are cooperating with our subpoena. They have security footage of Patricia losing twenty thousand dollars in a single weekend using wire transfers initiated from Derek’s phone.”

Dad reached across the table and placed his warm, calloused hand over mine.

“It’s almost over, Claire,” he whispered. “You survived the worst of it. Now it’s time to rebuild.”
