Chapter 5 - The Digital Vault

Two weeks later, I sat in the high-security conference room of the District Attorney’s office in downtown Indianapolis.
Across the polished walnut table sat Assistant District Attorney Marcus Vance—a sharp prosecutor with salt-and-pepper hair and a reputation for dismantling high-profile predators—along with Detective Miller and a digital forensics specialist named Kevin.
“Mrs. Hayes, thank you for coming in,” ADA Vance began, opening a thick manila folder labeled State v. Mark Hayes. “We have finished decrypting the external hard drive recovered from your husband’s vehicle, as well as extracting cloud backups linked to his encrypted storage accounts.”
Kevin, the forensics expert, spun his laptop around so the screen faced me.
“What you’re looking at is a structured directory,” Kevin explained, clicking open a folder. “Mark didn't just store videos locally. He uploaded them to a private, encrypted server hosted overseas. The directory contains over four hundred video files spanning the last fourteen months.”
My stomach churned violently at the sight of the file names—each one meticulously tagged with dates, times, and developmental milestones of my daughter’s life, treated like inventory rather than a child.
“Is there more?” I asked, my voice barely audible.
“Yes, Mrs. Hayes,” Detective Miller intervened, sliding a printed document across the table. “We also uncovered an extensive financial trail. Mark was part of an online subscription ring—a dark-web forum where individuals trade illicit material and coordinate encrypted communication. He wasn't just consuming content; he was an active contributor and administrator.”
The horror of what I was hearing felt too vast to comprehend. The man who kissed my cheek before work was part of a global network of predators.
“How does this affect the upcoming trial?” I asked, keeping my focus entirely on justice.
“It destroys any possibility of a plea bargain or a light sentence,” ADA Vance stated firmly, adjusting his glasses. “With the distribution charges, the financial records linking him to an illicit trafficking ring, and the aggravated child abuse statutes, we are looking at multiple consecutive federal and state indictments. If convicted on all counts, Mark Hayes will never see the outside of a maximum-security prison cell again.”
“Good,” I said, the word dropping like a stone. “What do you need from me?”
“Your formal testimony,” ADA Vance replied softly. “And a victim impact statement from Sophie, handled through a certified child forensic psychologist to protect her from secondary trauma. We want to ensure her voice is heard, but shielded.”

“She will testify through her recorded forensic interview,” I agreed. “Whatever it takes to lock him away forever.”
As I walked out of the downtown municipal building into the brisk autumn air, I felt a strange, steady strength settling into my bones. The digital vault had been cracked open, exposing the darkest corners of my husband’s double life to the harsh, unforgiving light of justice.
