Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Records

The next forty-eight hours were a blur of caffeine-fueled isolation. I couldn't trust the local police; they were my father's golfing buddies, the same men who attended the charity balls my mother threw every spring. I needed access, and I needed it without a paper trail.

I remembered Claire’s old laptop, an ancient, dusty machine she’d kept in the back of our closet. I hadn't been able to bring myself to turn it on since the funeral. With shaking hands, I plugged it in. The battery held a charge, the screen flickering to life with a familiar, cheerful background image of our wedding day.

I started searching. I didn't look for emails—I looked for hidden partitions. Claire was a systems architect; she didn't just store files, she built vaults. I used the password she had given me for our first savings account—a sentimental touch that proved to be the key.

What I found was a digital chronicle of a nightmare. There were recordings, log entries, and scan results. Claire had known. She had documented every "treatment" my mother and Rebecca had forced upon her under the guise of helping her with her post-partum exhaustion. They had used her as a test subject for a new class of synthetic sedatives intended to treat anxiety—drugs that were clearly causing the neurological collapse that led to her death.

There was a video file, dated three days before she passed. Claire looked frail, her eyes hollow, but her voice was steady. "If anyone finds this," she said, looking directly into the camera, "it’s Daniel. It was always for Daniel and Lily. My parents-in-law think they are doing the world a favor by 'calming' me. They’ve been doing it for years. I am a captive in my own home, in my own life."

I didn't scream. I didn't cry. I sat in the darkness of the motel room, watching my wife’s last stand, and I felt a strange, cold clarity settle over me. I wasn't just a father protecting his daughter anymore; I was an executioner. I had the map, I had the motive, and I had the evidence that would tear the Collins family empire down to the studs. But I needed more than just the files—I needed to prove they were still doing it. I needed to know if they had tried the same thing on Lily.
