Chapter 3 - The Hidden Trail

The meeting with Ms. Parker in the back of her sedan was the turning point. She had been Mia’s teacher for two years, and her eyes, usually bright and kind, were now hardened by the knowledge of what had truly happened.
"I didn't tell anyone else," she whispered, her voice barely audible over the sound of rain hitting the roof. "If I go to the police, Daniel will find out, and they might be in his pocket. But I did some digging, Sarah. That woman in the video? Her name is Elena Vance. She's a 'fixer' in the city. People like Daniel use her when they have a problem—or an asset—that needs to disappear."
She handed me a manila envelope. Inside were copies of emails she had intercepted from the school's admin account. They were dated months ago, outlining a "transfer of guardianship" signed by Daniel, utilizing a forged signature of mine. My heart shattered. He had been planning this for months. Mia wasn't an impulsive decision; she was a calculated piece of his corporate game.
"Why?" I asked, my voice cracking. "Why would he need her for a legacy claim? We're a normal family."

"You think you're normal," Parker replied, her voice filled with a weary wisdom. "But Daniel isn't who you think he is. The C.S. Holdings firm isn't just about business. It's a front for a group of ultra-wealthy individuals who require 'legitimate' heirs for trust funds that have been dormant for decades. Mia was the perfect age, the perfect look. He sold her because he was in deep, Sarah. He was millions in debt, and this was his way out."
The revelation hit me with a physical force, doubling me over in the seat. My daughter—my sweet, laughing Mia who loved the color yellow and insisted on wearing her rain boots even when it was sunny—was a line item on a balance sheet. The rage that filled me was no longer just a flicker; it was a wildfire. I wasn't going to just get her back; I was going to burn the house Daniel had built around us to the ground.
