Chapter 5 - The Glass Castle Shatters

“No, no, there’s been a mistake! My signature is on the mortgage! I’m a senior executive at Sterling Financial! You can’t do this!” Adrian shouted, his voice pitching upward in frantic denial as the process server calmly handed him the remaining packets of paperwork.
Trooper Miller stepped past Adrian into the foyer, his posture firm and authoritative. “Mr. Holloway, in addition to the property injunctions, we also hold an active felony warrant for your arrest issued by the District Attorney’s office.”
Adrian staggered backward, colliding with the console table. “Arrest? Are you out of your mind?! What crime could I possibly have committed?!”
“Domestic assault resulting in bodily harm, serial grand larceny through financial embezzlement, and fraudulent misappropriation of trust assets,” Trooper Miller recited smoothly, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his tactical belt. “Turn around and put your hands behind your back.”
“Clara!” Adrian screamed, lunging toward the hallway as the troopers grabbed his arms with immovable strength. “Clara, tell them! Tell them this is a sick joke! You’re my wife! You can’t do this to me!”
I walked slowly out of the kitchen, wiping my hands on a linen napkin, stopping ten feet away from him.
The heavy makeup still covered the bruise beneath my eye, but my gaze was entirely bare—sharp, piercing, and utterly devoid of the fear he had relied on for years.
“I told you once before, Adrian,” I said quietly, letting every word hang heavy in the air. “You mistook my silence for weakness.”
“You set me up!” Adrian thrashed violently against the troopers, his face purple with rage as the handcuffs clicked tightly around his wrists. “You conniving, manipulative bitch! You let me live here! You let me run my life while you were plotting behind my back!”
“I didn't set you up, Adrian,” I corrected coldly. “You built a glass castle out of stolen money, abuse, and arrogance. All I did was throw the first stone.”
“Get him in the cruiser,” Trooper Miller instructed his partner, hauling Adrian toward the open front door as he continued to scream obscenities, kicking his legs against the hardwood floor.
Within minutes, the flashing red and blue lights of the police cruiser illuminated the foyer walls before fading down the private driveway, carrying away the man who had believed he owned my entire existence.
As the front door clicked shut, leaving the house in profound, absolute silence, my phone buzzed in my pocket.

It was a text message from Marcus: First phase complete. Asset freeze active across all of Adrian’s personal and corporate accounts. His employer has been notified of the felony fraud indictments. He’s finished.
I closed my eyes, took a long, deep breath of pure, unpolluted air, and smiled.
