Chapter 6 - The Day in Court

The Denver District Courtroom 4B was packed to the gills on Monday morning.

It was the consolidated hearing for the permanent domestic violence restraining order, the emergency corporate asset freeze, and the initial criminal arraignment of Dominic Vance for aggravated domestic assault and corporate fraud.

When Dominic walked into the courtroom, handcuffed and wearing a standard-issue county orange jumpsuit, the transformation was staggering. The polished, charismatic CEO who had commanded boardrooms and dazzled investors was gone. In his place sat a hollowed-out, panicked shell of a man with dark circles under his eyes, unshaven cheeks, and a look of sheer, unadulterated terror.

He scanned the gallery, locking eyes with me as I sat at the plaintiff’s table flanked by Harrison Vance and two corporate security specialists.

Dominic’s mouth moved silently, forming words of frantic plea, but I didn't flinch. I held his gaze with absolute, unyielding calm.

The presiding judge, a formidable woman with iron-gray hair named Judge Evelyn Higgins, reviewed the case files with meticulous care before slamming her gavel down to call the court to order.

“We have before us a series of severe petitions,” Judge Higgins began, her voice echoing off the mahogany walls. “We will address the domestic violence restraining order and physical assault charges first, followed by the corporate embezzlement and financial fraud filings.”

Dominic’s defense attorney—a public defender who looked like he had met his client twenty minutes before walking into the courtroom—stood up nervously.

“Your Honor, regarding the domestic violence allegations, my client maintains that the injuries sustained by Ms. Callahan-Vance were the unfortunate result of an accidental domestic fall down a flight of stairs during a mutual argument,” the lawyer recited dutifully.

Harrison stood up immediately, buttoning his suit jacket.

“Objection, Your Honor. That narrative is categorically refuted by both medical science and digital evidence,” Harrison stated smoothly. He stepped forward, handing a thick dossier to the bailiff to distribute to the bench. “We submit the complete ICU trauma records from St. Jude Memorial Hospital, including CT scans confirming three fractured ribs caused by severe blunt-force trauma inconsistent with a fall, as well as defensive bruising patterns on the victim’s forearms.”

Harrison paused, clicking a remote in his hand. A large digital screen mounted on the courtroom wall flickered to life.

“Furthermore, we submit an audio recording obtained from the home security system inside the Vance residence, captured on the night of the incident.”

The courtroom fell into a dead, suffocating silence.

Harrison pressed play.

The courtroom speakers crackled to life, broadcasting the unmistakable sounds of violent shouting, the sickening thud of a human body hitting a hardwood floor, Dominic’s cold, furious voice growling, “Stop crying or I’ll give you something really to cry about,” followed by my muffled gasps for air.

Dominic slumped forward in his chair, burying his face in his cuffed hands as the devastating audio filled the room. The public defender looked down at his papers, quietly sliding his chair three inches away from his client.

Judge Higgins listened to the recording with a face carved from stone. When the audio finally cut out, she looked up at Dominic, her eyes flashing with cold fury.

“Mr. Vance,” Judge Higgins said, her voice dropping an octave into a register of pure ice. “In my twenty-five years on the bench, I have rarely encountered such cowardly brutality paired with such brazen deception.”

She didn't even wait for closing arguments.

“The permanent protective order is granted for a duration of twenty years, with zero-tolerance proximity violations,” Judge Higgins ruled, striking her gavel with a resounding crack. “Furthermore, based on the preliminary forensic audit submitted by the corporate prosecution team, bail for the criminal assault and corporate fraud charges is set at one million dollars cash-only. Remand the defendant into custody.”

Two bailiffs stepped forward, grabbed Dominic by the shoulders, and hauled him to his feet. As they dragged him away toward the holding cells, Dominic let out a choked, desperate sob, looking back at me with eyes wide with broken despair.

I didn't blink. I didn't smile. I simply watched him disappear through the heavy metal doors, knowing that his nightmare was only just beginning.
