Chapter 6 - A New Beginning and Labor Day

Two weeks after the divorce was finalized, the rain over Manhattan yielded to the warm, bright sunshine of late April.

I was sitting in the sunroom of my penthouse, surrounded by fresh white peonies and plush baby blankets, when the first sharp contraction hit me.

It wasn't the terrifying, chaotic scene you see in movies. I took a deep breath, checked the timer on my phone, and called my personal midwife and my driver. Within forty minutes, I was settled into a private, luxurious maternity suite at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, overlooking the East River.

My mother, who had flown in from her estate in Palm Beach, sat beside my bed holding my hand, brushing dark curls from my forehead.

“You’re so strong, Clara,” my mother whispered softly. “Your grandfather would be so proud of you.”

“I feel peaceful, Mom,” I smiled, breathing through another mild contraction. “For the first time in years, I know my child is going to grow up in a home full of truth, respect, and real love.”

At 4:15 PM, after six hours of smooth, uncomplicated labor, the quiet room was filled with the clear, powerful cry of a newborn baby.

The doctor placed a beautiful, healthy seven-pound baby boy onto my chest. He had soft dark hair, wide blue eyes, and tiny fingers that immediately reached out and latched onto my thumb.

“He’s perfect, Clara,” my mother wept happily, leaning down to kiss my forehead. “What are you going to name him?”

I looked down at my son, feeling a wave of absolute, unconditional love wash over my soul—a feeling so deep and pure that it instantly erased every scar left by Julian and his parasitic family.

“Leo,” I whispered, kissing the top of his soft head. “Leo Sterling. He carries my family’s name, and he will grow up to be a real man.”

Outside the hospital room door, unknown to me at the time, Julian had tried to enter the maternity ward.

Having seen my private security detail arriving at the hospital earlier that afternoon via social media updates from my gallery contacts, he had rushed to the hospital in a desperate bid to play the repentant father.

But my security team was already in place. Marcus had issued an explicit hospital restriction order. Julian was stopped in the lobby by three uniformed officers and politely but firmly escorted off the hospital premises.

He stood on the crowded Manhattan sidewalk in the falling twilight, watching the high-rise windows of the maternity wing from afar, realizing that the birth of his firstborn son was a milestone he would only ever read about from a distance.
