Chapter 5 - The Siege of McLean

By 7:00 PM that evening, Laura returned to her home in McLean—the grand stone colonial house sitting on two acres of lush green lawns behind wrought-iron gates.

For months, the house had felt like a golden cage, a dark, quiet place where Julian’s heavy footsteps in the hallway meant fear and Evelyn’s sharp, condescending voice left Laura feeling small and worthless.

Now, as the iron gates swung open, two private security officers hired by Sarah Lin’s firm stood guard at the driveway entrance.

The locks on the front door had already been replaced by a professional locksmith. Inside, the house was bright, warm, and entirely theirs.

Laura walked into the high-ceilinged kitchen, setting down bags of fresh groceries, organic milk, rotisserie chicken, and chocolate ice cream.

Maya ran around the island, holding her rabbit in the air, laughing out loud as she chased the family’s golden retriever, Barnaby, whom Julian had locked in the basement garage three days earlier.

"Mommy!" Maya shouted, stopping by the wide glass doors overlooking the garden. "Barnaby is happy! He missed us!"

Laura dropped to her knees, hugging the dog and her daughter, letting the tears flow freely. There were no sleeping pills in her system tonight. Her mind was crystal clear.

Suddenly, a loud, metallic bang echoed from the front gate intercom.

Laura’s body instantly went rigid. She stood up, pulling Maya behind her, and walked to the wall monitor.

On the screen, Evelyn Whitaker stood outside the iron gates in the rain. Her expensive hair was ruined, her mink coat soaked, her face twisted in a snarl of desperate rage. Beside her stood Julian’s uncle, Richard Whitaker—a wealthy senior partner in a Richmond law firm.

Evelyn pressed the intercom button repeatedly.

"Laura!" Evelyn’s shrill, screeching voice blared through the kitchen speaker. "Open this gate right now, you ungrateful little tramp! You’ve put my son in jail! You’ve ruined our family name! Open this gate or Richard will have you thrown out on the street by morning!"

Laura looked at the screen.

A month ago, that voice would have made her retreat to her bedroom, trembling, doubting her own sanity, bowing her head to avoid a scene.

Laura walked over to the wall monitor, reached out her hand, and pressed the talk button.

"Evelyn," Laura said. Her voice was calm, clear, and carried a steady, terrifying weight that caused the woman on the screen to freeze.

"Laura! Don't you dare use that tone with me—"

"If you do not remove yourself from my driveway within sixty seconds," Laura interrupted smoothly, "the armed security officers standing twenty feet behind you will arrest you for trespassing and violation of an active emergency protective order."

On the screen, Richard Whitaker turned, his eyes widening as he saw two large, uniformed private security officers stepping out of a black SUV near the gate, their hands resting near their tactical holsters.

"Laura!" Evelyn shrieked, her voice cracking. "Julian is my son! You can't do this!"

"Your son is a felon, Evelyn," Laura replied through the speaker. "And you are his accomplice. Get off my property."

Laura pressed the button, cutting off the connection, and turned off the intercom display completely.

The screen went black.

Maya looked up at her mother, her big brown eyes wide with wonder. "Mommy? Are you scary now?"

May you like

Laura knelt down, taking her daughter’s small face into her hands, pressing a soft kiss to her forehead.

"No, sweet pea," Laura smiled, a bright, genuine warmth illuminating her eyes. "Mommy isn't scary. Mommy is finally awake."
