Chapter 8 - The Hammer of Justice

The jury deliberated for precisely forty-seven minutes.
When the court reconvened at 3:30 PM, the atmosphere inside the courtroom was thick with tension.
Brian stood beside his attorney, pulling at his shirt collar, sweat dripping down his neck.
The judge, the Honorable Marcus Sterling—a veteran judge known for his stern, uncompromising rulings—took his seat on the bench.
“Has the jury reached a verdict?” Judge Sterling asked.
The foreperson, a tall man in a navy blazer, stood up. “We have, Your Honor.”
He handed the verdict sheet to the bailiff, who passed it up to the bench. Judge Sterling reviewed the document, nodded slowly, and looked down at the defense table.
“The defendant will stand for the reading of the verdict.”
Brian stood up on shaky legs, clutching the edge of the wooden table.
“On Count One: Felony Domestic Battery with Great Bodily Harm... how do you find?”
“We find the defendant, Brian Edward Vance, GUILTY,” the foreperson declared clearly.
“On Count Two: Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon... GUILTY.”
“On Count Three: Witness Intimidation and Violation of a Protective Order... GUILTY.”
Behind the defense table, Melissa let out a muffled sob and buried her face in her hands. Brian collapsed back into his leather chair, his mouth open, staring blankly at the floor as if his mind had refused to accept the reality unfolding around him.
Judge Sterling turned his attention directly to Brian.
“Mr. Vance,” Judge Sterling said, his voice echoing with profound authority. “In my twenty years on the bench, I have rarely seen a case of domestic abuse marked by such cold entitlement and utter lack of remorse. You took advantage of a woman who offered you love, shelter, and financial security. And when she refused to allow you to exploit her further, you committed a cowardly, violent act that permanently scarred her.”
Judge Sterling picked up his pen to sign the official order.
“The court hereby sentences you, Brian Edward Vance, to Twelve Years in the Florida Department of Corrections, to be followed by five years of strict probation upon your release. You will pay full financial restitution in the amount of ninety-four thousand dollars to the victim’s trust fund.”
Slam!
The wooden gavel struck the block like a clap of thunder.
Two armed bailiffs immediately stepped behind Brian, pulled his arms behind his back, and locked heavy iron handcuffs onto his wrists.
“Take him away,” Judge Sterling ordered.
As Brian was led toward the side door leading to the holding cells, he turned his head, looking desperately at me one last time.

“Sarah!” he cried out, his voice high and pathetic. “Sarah! Please! Twelve years?! Help me!”
I stood tall in my ASU uniform, my chin level, my hands clasped loosely behind my back. I watched him being dragged through the heavy steel doors until they slammed shut, cutting off his screams forever.
