Chapter 5 - The Corporate and Social Collapse

By Wednesday, Brandon’s humiliation was no longer confined to his private life—it had leaked into the high-society corporate circles he cared about more than anything else.
Apex Financial Services officially placed him on indefinite administrative leave following the confirmation of his domestic restraining order and the freezing of his personal assets by the family court. His colleagues, who had once slapped him on the back and laughed at his sexist jokes about “married life,” now avoided him entirely in the hallways, terrified of being associated with a disgraced executive facing potential criminal financial penalties for siphoning marital trust funds.
Even worse for Brandon was the reaction of his mother, Eleanor.
Eleanor Carter—a woman who had spent six months treating me like an indentured servant and constantly whispering in Brandon’s ear that he deserved a subservient wife—had discovered that her monthly allowance, paid for out of our joint savings, had been abruptly cut off by court injunction.
She arrived unannounced at Brandon’s cheap motel room on Wednesday evening, pounding on his door until he let her in.
“Brandon! What is going on?!” Eleanor shrieked, clutching her designer handbag as she surveyed the cramped, sterile motel room with undisguised horror. “My credit card was declined at Saks Fifth Avenue today! The bank told me my auxiliary account has been frozen! And when I tried calling Sarah, her number blocked me instantly!”
Brandon buried his face in his hands, sitting on the edge of the unmade twin bed. He looked ten years older than he had a week ago, his clothes wrinkled, his hair uncombed.
“She locked me out, Mom,” Brandon muttered bitterly. “She threw my things into boxes, filed for divorce, and got a restraining order.”
Eleanor stared at her son in utter disbelief, her mouth dropping open. “A restraining order?! Are you completely incompetent, Brandon?! How could you let a woman walk all over you like this?! You’re the man! You’re supposed to put her in her place!”
“Stop it!” Brandon suddenly snapped, leaping to his feet with a burst of furious energy. “Just stop it, Mother! Every time you told me to put my foot down, every time you told me she was just being dramatic, every time you belittled her behind her back... I listened to you! I treated her like garbage because you convinced me she was lucky to have me!”
Eleanor recoiled as if she had been slapped. “Brandon! How dare you speak to me that way! I raised you—”
“You raised me to be a selfish, entitled coward!” Brandon yelled, his voice cracking with raw, unmitigated despair. “And now she’s gone. My daughters are gone. My house is gone. My job is hanging by a thread, and I am sitting in a roach-infested motel room because I couldn't be bothered to wash a single baby bottle or spend four days taking care of my own children!”
Silence fell over the cramped room.

Eleanor stared at her son, the reality of their shared ruin finally dawning on her. There was no more money. There was no more domestic maid to boss around. There was only the bitter, inescapable wreckage of their own arrogance.
Without another word, Eleanor turned on her heel, yanked open the motel door, and walked out into the parking lot, leaving Brandon completely, utterly alone.
