Chapter 5 - The Tape in the Wall

"Clara."

His voice was terrifyingly calm. Smooth. Unhurried. The voice of a man sitting in a quiet hotel room with a glass of scotch in his hand.

"Daniel," I said, forcing a small, tired laugh into my tone. "I... I wasn't expecting you to call so late. Is everything okay with the conference?"

"The conference is fine," Daniel said slowly.

There was a long, excruciating three-second pause on the line. I could hear the faint hum of an air conditioner in the background of his room.

"Why are you in my basement, Clara?"

My heart stopped. My throat went completely bone dry.

I looked up at the corner of the basement ceiling. Half-hidden behind a water pipe was another small, black thumbtack camera with its microscopic red light glowing steadily.

He was watching me right now on his phone screen.

Brody saw my eyes dart to the pipe. He immediately gestured for me to keep talking, frantically typing on his phone to accelerate the GPS trace.

"I... I was looking for the extra blanket, Daniel," I lied, my voice wavering despite my best efforts. "Lily woke up crying. She was cold."

"Lily doesn't get cold," Daniel replied, his tone chillingly flat. "And the extra blankets are in the hallway linen closet on the second floor. You know that, Clara."

"Daniel, please—"

"Did she talk to you?" he interrupted, his voice dropping into that dark, quiet register he used at the dinner table. "Did my ungrateful little daughter spread her dirty little lies again?"

"She's five years old, Daniel!" I screamed, dropping the act completely as tears broke from my eyes. "She's a baby! You starved her! You forced her to believe her mother didn't love her!"

A low, quiet chuckle came through the speaker. It was the most horrifying sound I had ever heard in my life.

"Evelyn was weak," Daniel said smoothly. "Just like Lily. They both thought they could defy me. They both thought they could take what was mine."

"Where is Evelyn?!" I demanded, holding the phone against my ear with both hands. "What did you do to her in Chicago?!"

"You'll figure it out eventually, Clara," Daniel said softly. "You're a bright woman. That's why I married you. But right now... you should probably check on your stepdaughter."

CLICK.

The line went dead.

"Brody!" I shrieked, dropping the phone onto the concrete floor. "He said check on Lily!"

Brody didn't hesitate. He drew his sidearm from his holster, took the basement stairs three at a time, and sprinted into the kitchen, with me right behind him.

"Officer Miller!" Brody shouted as we rounded the corner into the foyer. "Lock down the upper floor! Now!"

We took the main staircase at a full sprint. Officer Miller was already standing at the top of the stairs, her gun drawn, her face pale.

"What happened?!" Miller asked.

"Where is Sarah Lin and the child?!" Brody demanded.

"In the bedroom!" Miller said. "The door is locked!"

"What?!" I screamed, pushing past Officer Miller. "I left the door open!"

I slammed my shoulder against the lavender door of Lily’s bedroom. It didn't budge. The heavy brass deadbolt—the one I had installed so Lily would feel secure—had been thrown from the inside.

"Lily!" I screamed, banging my fists against the wood. "Lily! Sarah! Open the door!"

Silence answered from inside.

"Stand back!" Brody ordered, stepping back and raising his heavy tactical boot.

BOOM!

The door frame splintered.

BOOM!

The lock gave way with a loud crunch of wood, and the door swung wide open.

The room was empty.

The window overlooking the backyard was wide open, the white sheer curtains billowing in the cool night air. The screen had been cut cleanly away with a razor blade.

Sarah Lin, the social worker, was lying on the floor near the closet, groaning softly, holding a swelling bruise on the side of her head.

And Lily was gone.

"He was never in Chicago," I whispered, the cold reality hitting me like an avalanche. "He never left."

Brody sprinted to the window, shining his flashlight down onto the mud of the flowerbed below. Fresh, large boot prints led straight away from the house toward the thick tree line of the woods behind our property.

"Dispatch!" Brody roared into his shoulder radio. "We have an Officer-In-Involved Abduction! Suspect Daniel Whitaker is on foot in the rear woods behind 1412 Maple Ridge Lane! He has the five-year-old victim! Initiate a full perimeter lockdown and deploy K-9 units immediately!"

I knelt beside Sarah Lin, helping her sit up.

"He came through the window..." Sarah gasped, clutching her head. "He was wearing dark clothes... he had a key... he hit me before I could draw my taser..."

I stood up, turning to look at the open window, my mind burning with a sudden, absolute clarity.

Daniel hadn't just returned for Lily to hide his secrets. He had returned to complete his punishment.

I grabbed Brody’s arm as he moved toward the door. "The woods," I said, my voice dead calm. "He has an old hunting cabin three miles deep in those woods. He bought it four years ago under a fake LLC. He told me it was an investment property."

Brody grabbed his radio. "Give me the address or coordinates, Clara!"

"I don't have the address," I said, striding toward the door with an unstoppable determination. "But I know the path. And I'm coming with you."
