Chapter 4 - The Courtroom Showdown

The courtroom of the County Probate Division was packed to capacity. Word had spread like wildfire through the city’s legal and financial circles: the Vale empire was collapsing from within, and Arthur Mercer was holding the wrecking ball.
Flashbulbs popped outside the courthouse steps as my father’s armored SUV pulled up, shielding me as I walked past a wall of reporters shouting questions about the eviction, the forged documents, and the child assault charges. I kept my head high, holding Eli’s small hand in mine. He wore a crisp navy-blue blazer that had belonged to his father—slightly too big in the sleeves, but making him look like a miniature gentleman.
Inside, the atmosphere was thick with tension.
Marjorie Vale sat at the defense table, flanked by two high-priced defense attorneys who looked significantly less confident than they had that morning. Marjorie wore a fresh black pantsuit, her hair meticulously styled, but her fingers twitched nervously against the wooden tabletop. She refused to look in our direction as we entered.
Grant, released on an emergency bail bond conditioned on home confinement, was absent, holed up in a hotel room under electronic monitoring.
Judge Thomas Sterling, a veteran jurist with a reputation for absolute intolerance of corporate chicanery, adjusted his spectacles and peered down from the bench over the sea of legal briefs stacked before him.
"Order in the court," Judge Sterling said, his deep voice cutting through the murmurs like a knife. "We are here for an emergency probate injunction hearing regarding the Estate of Daniel Vale, Docket Number 884-CV-2026. Mr. Mercer, your legal team filed a motion for emergency receivership and criminal referral for document falsification."
My father’s lead attorney, a razor-sharp litigator named Victoria Vance—no relation to the Vales, thankfully—stood up, buttoning her jacket.
"Thank you, Your Honor," Victoria began, her voice crisp and authoritative. "We move to submit Exhibit A through H into the permanent record: verified digital forensic reports proving that the document submitted by the defense—purporting to transfer all estate assets to the Vale Trust—was generated twelve hours after the decedent's death on a non-secure terminal inside Attorney Henderson’s office."
Marjorie’s lead attorney jumped to his feet. "Objection, Your Honor! The defense requests a 48-hour window to review these technical assertions—"
"Overruled, counselor," Judge Sterling barked, not even looking up. "Your clients walked into a police-guarded residence, assaulted a six-year-old child, and attempted to execute a fraudulent estate transfer using a forged signature that fails basic forensic comparison. You’re lucky I haven't ordered your immediate detention for contempt of court."
A collective intake of breath rippled through the gallery. Marjorie’s hands clenched so tightly into fists that her knuckles turned bone-white.
Victoria continued smoothly, stepping toward the center of the well. "Furthermore, Your Honor, we present the true, unalterable primary deed and final testament of Daniel Vale, registered internationally in Zurich and countersigned by Mercer Holdings as institutional trustee."
Victoria turned toward the gallery and nodded.
Marcus Vance stood up from the family section, walked forward, and handed a heavy, leather-bound portfolio directly to the court bailiff, who carried it up to the bench.
Judge Sterling opened the portfolio. He slipped on his reading glasses, scanning the heavy parchment paper, the intricate holographic watermarks, and the unmistakable, deeply etched signature of Daniel Vale—complete with the sharp upward stroke on the final letter of his surname that Grant had so foolishly tried to alter into a downward curve.
The judge read in silence for nearly two minutes. The courtroom was so quiet you could hear the hum of the fluorescent lights overhead.
Finally, Judge Sterling removed his glasses and looked down at Marjorie Vale.
"Mrs. Vale," the judge’s voice was lethal in its quietness. "According to this document—executed legally and filed two years ago upon the birth of Daniel Vale’s son—100% of the Vale estate, including the primary residential holding, the commercial real estate portfolio, and controlling voting shares of Vale Enterprises, are held in trust exclusively for minor heir Eli Mercer-Vale, with sole guardianship and administrative control vested in his mother, Claire Mercer-Vale."
Marjorie stared straight ahead, her face locked in a mask of sheer horror.
"You didn't inherit an empire," Judge Sterling continued, slamming his gavel down with a sharp, resonant crack that echoed off the oak walls. "You tried to steal from a six-year-old child while his father's body was still warm in the earth. Case closed. Motion for emergency receivership granted in full. All assets frozen pending criminal trial for fraud, forgery, and conspiracy."

The gavel fell a second time.
"Get them out of my courtroom."
