Chapter 6 - The Foundation of a New Life

By late afternoon, the auction at the mansion was over, the buyers had cleared out, and the estate was entirely empty.

Arthur Sterling stood on the front steps, handing me the final set of keys to the property.

“What do you want to do with the estate, Evelyn?” Arthur asked, looking out over the manicured lawns and the sprawling brick facade. “We can relist it on the market by spring. It’ll fetch twelve million easily.”

I looked down at Lily, who was sitting on the grass, happily tying a daisy chain around Molly the rag doll’s neck, completely at peace in the warm autumn sunlight.

Then I looked back at the grand oak doors of the mansion—doors that had once been a cage of intimidation, financial abuse, and domestic tyranny.

“We aren't selling it, Arthur,” I said softly.

Arthur raised an eyebrow. “Oh? What’s your plan for it?”

“We’re turning it into the Sterling-Mercer Foundation for Women’s Legal and Financial Independence,” I said, a slow, genuine smile spreading across my face. “A safe haven and legal aid center for mothers and children fleeing abusive households—women who need to know that no matter what anyone tells them, they always own the ground they stand on.”

Arthur smiled back, his gray eyes shining with deep, hard-earned respect. He tucked his pen into his breast pocket and bowed his head slightly.

“Your father would have been very proud of you, Evelyn.”

“He taught me well,” I said.

I walked over to the lawn, picked up Lily into my arms, and breathed in the clean, crisp autumn air. The bruises on my jaw were fading, the pain in my lip was gone, and for the first time in my life, every single step I took was on my own terms.

We got into the car, leaving the grand iron gates of the estate behind us, driving toward a future where nobody would ever tell us whose roof we were living under again.
