PART 2: The Red Folder

For the first time that morning, Alejandro looked nervous.

Only for a second.

A brief flicker.

But I saw it.

After seven years of marriage, I knew every expression on his face.

And right now, the confidence that had filled the courtroom moments earlier was beginning to crack.

The judge looked at me.

"Mrs. Mendoza, you may present your evidence."

My hands trembled slightly as I opened the red folder.

Not because I was afraid.

Because of what it had cost me to gather everything inside.

Months of silence.

Months of humiliation.

Months of pretending not to notice.

All leading to this moment.

Across the room, Alejandro's attorney adjusted his tie.

Still confident.

Still believing whatever I had couldn't possibly outweigh the narrative they had already created.

An unstable woman.

A dependent wife.

A mother unfit to raise her child.

He had no idea how wrong he was.

I removed the first document.

A bank statement.

Then another.

Then another.

The judge examined them carefully.

Alejandro frowned.

His lawyer leaned forward.

"What exactly are these?"

I answered calmly.

"Financial transfers."

The courtroom remained silent.

I continued.

"Transfers from our joint accounts."

The lawyer shrugged.

"That proves nothing."

The judge did.

And suddenly her expression changed.

Just slightly.

But enough.

The attorney noticed it too.

His confidence faltered.

Because the transfers weren't going toward household expenses.

They weren't paying bills.

They weren't investments.

Every payment led to the same person.

Vanessa.

Alejandro's fiancée.

The woman sitting beside him.

The woman wearing my bracelet.

The woman who suddenly looked very uncomfortable.

The attorney cleared his throat.

"These appear to be gifts."

I almost laughed.

"Gifts totaling four hundred and eighty-seven thousand dollars?"

The room erupted in whispers.

The judge immediately called for order.

Alejandro shifted in his chair.

Vanessa's face turned pale.

But I wasn't finished.

Not even close.

I reached into the folder again.

And removed a stack of printed text messages.

The attorney objected immediately.

"Your Honor—"

"These messages have already been authenticated," I said.

The judge nodded.

The objection was denied.

I handed the pages forward.

Alejandro's expression darkened.

Now he knew.

He finally understood what was happening.

The messages appeared on the courtroom screens.

The first few were ordinary.

Then the later ones appeared.

And the room became silent.

Painfully silent.

Vanessa's smile disappeared completely.

Alejandro's own words filled the screen.

"Once the baby is born, everything becomes easier."

Another message.

"The custody case is already arranged."

Another.

"The judge only needs to see her therapy records."

Another.

"Nobody trusts emotional women."

The courtroom murmured again.

The judge looked up sharply.

Then came the message that changed everything.

The one I had reread a hundred times.

The one that made me cry the first time I discovered it.

Alejandro had sent it to Vanessa three weeks before I gave birth.

"As soon as I get custody, Elena is finished."

Vanessa slowly turned toward him.

Her eyes widened.

Because she hadn't known.

Not all of it.

Not the real plan.

Not the cruelty behind it.

Alejandro avoided her gaze.

For the first time all day, he looked afraid.

Then I reached deeper into the red folder.

And removed a flash drive.

The moment Alejandro saw it, his face lost all color.

Every drop.

The reaction was immediate.

Violent.

Terrified.

His attorney noticed.

The judge noticed.

Everyone noticed.

And suddenly every eye in the courtroom focused on the tiny device resting in my hand.

The judge narrowed her eyes.

"What is on that drive?"

I took a breath.

Then answered.

"Audio recordings."

Alejandro stood abruptly.

"Your Honor, I object."

The panic in his voice echoed through the courtroom.

Too late.

Far too late.

The judge looked directly at him.

"Sit down, Mr. Mendoza."

Slowly, he obeyed.

But his hands were shaking.

Because he knew exactly what was coming.

The recordings had been made over eight months.

Conversations.

Phone calls.

Private meetings.

Moments Alejandro believed nobody else would ever hear.

The courtroom technician inserted the drive.

A speaker crackled.

Then Alejandro's voice filled the room.

Clear.

Undeniable.

Brutal.

"Keep pressuring her."

The room froze.

Another voice appeared.

His mother.

Doña Victoria.

"She's exhausted. She'll eventually sign."

Then Alejandro again.

"If she doesn't, we'll make her look unstable."

I watched the judge's face.

The attorney's face.

Vanessa's face.

One by one, the truth landed.

Like stones dropping into water.

Then came another recording.

The worst one.

The recording that had haunted me for months.

Alejandro speaking to his lawyer.

Not knowing the call was being legally recorded through a business conference system.

"Can we use the postpartum depression angle?"

A pause.

"It'll strengthen the custody argument."

The courtroom gasped.

Even the attorney representing Alejandro looked stunned.

Because he hadn't heard this recording before.

I could see it in his eyes.

His client had lied to him too.

The judge immediately stopped the playback.

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Then she looked directly at Alejandro.

"What exactly am I listening to?"

No answer.

For the first time in years, Alejandro Mendoza had nothing to say.

Nothing at all.

Vanessa slowly removed the diamond bracelet from her wrist.

Placed it on the table.

And moved her chair several inches away from him.

The gesture was small.

But devastating.

Because everyone understood what it meant.

She no longer wanted to be associated with him.

Alejandro noticed.

His face tightened.

His perfect image was collapsing.

And the hearing wasn't even over.

Because hidden beneath every document, every recording, every bank statement...

Was one final piece of evidence.

The piece that would not only destroy his custody case—

But expose a crime that could send him to prison.

And as I pulled the last sealed envelope from the bottom of the red folder, Alejandro whispered a single word under his breath.

"No."

Because he recognized it.

May you like

And he knew exactly what was inside.
