Chapter 5 - The Counter-Attack

Back at the Oakridge Estate, the atmosphere was entirely different. Sunlight poured through the tall arched windows, illuminating the living room where Emily and Michael were meeting with Marcus Vance, the top-tier family law attorney who had successfully dismantled corporate dynasties across the state.
Marcus laid out a series of legal documents across the coffee table.
"Here is where we stand," Marcus said, looking directly at Emily. "Ryan has been fired from Apex Global. His personal bank accounts have been frozen by a federal judge pending the embezzlement investigation. Furthermore, because the house is protected under your family trust, his emergency petition for temporary marital residency has been summarily dismissed by the judge."
Emily let out a long, shaky breath she felt like she had been holding for years. "Can he contest the custody of Noah?"
"He can try," Marcus nodded, adjusting his glasses. "In fact, his new defense attorney filed an emergency petition this morning claiming that you are 'emotionally unstable' and that Noah was coached to make the 911 call."
Noah, who was sitting on the window seat playing with a Lego set, looked up instantly. "I didn't lie! Daddy was choking Mom! I saw him!"
Emily walked over, gently taking her son’s small hands in hers. "We know you didn't lie, sweetie. Nobody is taking you anywhere. Mommy and Grandpa are making sure of that."
"Marcus," Michael said, leaning forward with a dangerous gleam in his eyes. "What does the bodycam footage from the responding officers show?"
"It shows everything," Marcus smiled faintly. "The bruising on Emily's neck, Ryan’s panicked admission when he saw the officers, and Noah's spontaneous statement recorded live on the officer's chest camera. Under state law, committing domestic violence in the immediate presence of a minor elevates the charge from a misdemeanor to a class-four felony with mandatory minimum sentencing guidelines."
"And the financial records?" Emily asked.
"Completely airtight," Marcus confirmed. "We have tracking numbers for every dollar he diverted from your personal trust into his mistress's account. Jessica Moore has already been brought in for questioning, and she’s singing like a canary to save her own skin. She handed over text messages where Ryan explicitly boasted about how he was going to bleed you dry if you ever tried to divorce him."
Emily looked down at her hands. The physical marks on her neck were turning a faint shade of yellow now, healing slowly under the care of doctors and the unwavering safety of her family. But the emotional scars—the realization of how deeply she had been deceived by the man she trusted—demanded a different kind of strength.

"I want a full protection order," Emily said, her voice unwavering. "No contact with me, no contact with Noah. And I want full legal and physical custody."
"You'll get it," Marcus said firmly. "And as for Ryan? He’s about to find out what happens when you wage a war against a family that has the truth on its side."
