Chapter 8 - Handcuffs and Treachery

Forty-eight hours after the deposition, the final legal hammer fell upon the Vance family.

At 8:00 A.M. on a chilly Friday morning, two state police cruisers and an unmarked federal transport vehicle pulled up outside the cheap motel where Daniel, Ashley, and Brad had been hiding out.

The warrants had been signed late Thursday evening by a federal magistrate following the completion of the financial fraud investigation.

Daniel was sitting on the edge of the unmade bed, eating a cheap convenience store pastry, when the door was kicked open by state troopers.

“Daniel Vance! Hands where we can see them! On the floor now!”

Daniel dropped his food, tumbling off the bed onto the dirty carpet, crying out as a trooper pulled his arms behind his back and clicked heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists.

In the adjacent room, Ashley was dragged out in her pajamas, screaming frantically as officers placed her under arrest for wire fraud and money laundering tied to the diverted family funds.

Brad, her boyfriend, didn't even try to help her. As troopers led him out in cuffs as an accessory, he immediately shouted to the lead investigator:

“I didn't take any of the money! It was all Ashley and her mom! I have texts proving they planned the whole thing! I’ll testify against them! Just don't charge me!”

Ashley looked at her boyfriend in utter disbelief, her face contorted in rage. “You pathetic coward! I paid for your car! I paid for your clothes!”

“You paid for it with stolen money!” Brad yelled back as officers pushed him into the rear of a cruiser.

By 10:00 A.M., all four members of the dinner party—Olivia, Daniel, Ashley, and Brad—were sitting in processing cells at the county detention facility, dressed in identical orange jumpsuits, awaiting their formal arraignment.

The grand jury had returned a multi-count indictment:

1. Olivia Vance: Two counts of Felony Child Endangerment, one count of Grand Larceny, and two counts of Financial Fraud. 2. Daniel Vance: One count of Child Neglect by Omission, two counts of Corporate Wire Fraud, and one count of Grand Larceny. 3. Ashley Vance: One count of Money Laundering and one count of Receiving Stolen Property.

There were no high-priced defense attorneys sitting beside them.

The legal retainers they had attempted to pay using secondary accounts had been frozen by federal court order. They were represented by public defenders who had dozens of cases on their dockets and zero interest in entertaining Olivia’s delusions of aristocratic grandeur.

Inside the holding area, Olivia sat on a cold steel bench, her pristine hair now matted and grey, her silk robe replaced by rough denim.

When Daniel was brought into the same holding section, he looked at his mother with a burning, poisonous hatred that had been festering for weeks.

“This is your fault,” Daniel spat, his voice echoing off the concrete walls. “You destroyed my life! You destroyed my marriage! Sarah would have given us everything if you hadn't treated her like dirt!”

Olivia looked up, her eyes dull and sunken. “I raised you to be a man, Daniel. You were just too weak to control your wife.”

“Control her?!” Daniel laughed hysterically, tears running down his face. “She bought everything you ever touched! She paid for your house, your clothes, your food! You weren't a matriarch, Mom! You were just a parasite! And now we’re all going to prison because of your pride!”

Olivia turned her head away, looking at the cold concrete floor, unable to offer a single word of defense.

The family that had sat around my dining table three weeks earlier, laughing and drinking wine while my daughter sat shivering in the dark, had finally turned on each other like starved animals in a cage.
