Chapter 6 - Shadows in the House

Two weeks after our discharge from the hospital, Ryan and I returned home.
The police had finished processing the scene, but the house felt fundamentally altered. The lingering scent of cilantro and green sauce had long since been scrubbed away by forensic teams, replaced by the sharp, sterile tang of industrial bleach.
We stayed in the guest suite upstairs for the first few nights. Ryan refused to go near the kitchen, and every time the refrigerator hummed or a floorboard creaked, he would instinctively reach for my hand, his big eyes wide with a vigilance no six-year-old child should ever have to possess.
“Mommy, is he coming back?” Ryan asked quietly one evening as I tucked him into bed.
“No, baby, never,” I promised, kissing his forehead and pulling the blankets up to his chin. “He’s locked away in a very secure place where he can never hurt anyone ever again. And I am right here. I will always protect you.”
“Okay,” he whispered, finally letting his eyes drift shut.
I sat beside his bed until his breathing slowed into the deep, steady rhythm of dreamless sleep. Then, I stood up and walked down the darkened hallway into the master kitchen.
The dining table was gone—the police had seized it as physical evidence along with the plates and silverware. In its place stood an empty space of hardwood flooring.
I walked over to the counter, pulled out my laptop, and opened a secure portal provided by Marcus Sterling and Detective Vance. It contained the complete financial audit of Vale-Carter Holdings, the corporate entity Ethan had spent years building through debt, manipulation, and fraud.
With Ethan in maximum security and Veronica facing identical federal indictments, the corporate board had already initiated emergency dissolution proceedings. Because our assets were intertwined under joint marital property laws, I was legally entitled to full receivership of the estate before the bankruptcy court stepped in.
I typed rapidly, authorizing the immediate transfer of the remaining liquid accounts into a secure, sequestered trust fund bearing only my name and Ryan’s.

Ethan had wanted my life to secure his empire.
Instead, I was going to strip his empire down to bare concrete and leave him with nothing.
