Chapter 5 - The Shadow Over the Gala

By Wednesday morning, my father and I were working alongside Sarah Vance—a fierce, brilliant corporate defense attorney who had been a loyal friend to my mother.
Inside Sarah's high-rise office downtown, we laid out the entire mountain of evidence: the audio recordings, the intercepted mail, the forged debt ledgers, the secret patent transfers, and the newly discovered insurance policy.
"This is extraordinary," Sarah said, flipping through the printed bank statements. "It's not just corporate fraud, Camille. It's wire fraud, extortion, conspiracy, and attempted murder for financial gain."
"Can we arrest them now?" I asked, leaning forward.
"We could," Sarah answered thoughtfully, setting her pen down. "But if we file charges today, Reynolds’ team of high-priced lawyers will claim the audio was recorded illegally, tie the financial documents up in jurisdictional discovery for three years, and leave your father's factory tied up in bankruptcy court until it starves."
"Then what do we do?" my father asked.
Sarah smiled a dangerous, brilliant smile. "We let them proceed with the public signing at the gala on Friday night. We let Jasper and Reynolds present the forged transfer documents to the entire board, the press, and the city investors. The moment Jasper accepts the executed paperwork on camera, the crime is fully consummated under state fraud statutes."
"And then?" I asked.
"And then," Sarah leaned back, "we drop the anvil."
For the next forty-eight hours, I played the part of the obedient, dutiful wife to perfection.
I cooked Jasper's favorite meals. I smiled when he talked about buying a vacation home in Italy after the "factory debt was cleared." I sat patiently while he helped me select a stunning navy silk dress for the gala.
"You look breathtaking, sweetheart," Jasper murmured on Friday evening, adjusting his tuxedo bow tie in our bedroom mirror before sliding a delicate diamond necklace around my neck. "Tonight, we take control of our future."

I looked at our reflection in the mirror—the handsome predator and his quiet victim.
"Yes, Jasper," I whispered, touching the cool diamonds against my collarbone. "Tonight, everything changes."
