Chapter 7 - The Desperate Gamble

The final act of their desperation happened in the cold, gray light of the police station holding area.

Daniel was being processed for massive corporate fraud, but the detectives had just been handed the new file: the attempted murder charge. I watched from behind the observation glass as he was told the news. He slammed his fists against the table, his composure finally shattering.

He didn't care about the prison time for the fraud. He cared that he had been beaten by me.

"She's lying!" he screamed at the detectives. "She's unstable! She's been planning this for months! She's a sociopath!"

The lead detective didn't even look up from his notes. "Mr. Vance, we have the audio of your mother admitting to the incident, and we have your wife's medical records. You are in a lot of trouble."

In the adjacent room, Vivian was falling apart. She was trying to pin the entire thing on Daniel, screaming that he had forced her to move into our home and that he was the mastermind behind the oil incident.

They were turning on each other, just as I had calculated.

I stood in the hallway, watching the two people who had spent three years trying to hollow me out. They were reduced to nothing more than two rats in a cage, tearing at each other for a scrap of survival.

I felt a hand on my shoulder. It was my old mentor, the prosecutor I had sent the documents to.

"You did it, Evelyn," she said softly. "You got them."

"I didn't get them," I replied, smoothing my skirt. "They built their own cage. I just provided the lock."

I turned away from the observation glass. I had a life to reclaim, a fortune to manage, and a future that, for the first time in three years, didn't have a ceiling. The pain in my back was a reminder of what they had tried to do, but it was also a reminder of what I had survived.

I was no longer the victim. I was the architect of their ruin, and I was finally free.
