Chapter 5 - Unearthing the Past
Two days later, Aaron called us down to the precinct.
The digital forensic unit had finished extracting the data from the seized hard drives, and what they uncovered was far darker and more calculated than a simple spying device.
We sat in a small, windowless conference room across from Aaron and a senior cybercrimes investigator named Miller. Detective Miller slid a thick manila folder across the table, along with a printed transcript.
“We found the footage,” Miller said without preamble. “Not just live streams from the bear, but archived files dating back nearly six months. They weren't just watching Lily. They were building a profile.”
My stomach churned. “A profile for what?”
Miller opened the folder to reveal printed emails and digital documents recovered from Richard’s desktop computer.
“Custody preparation,” Aaron interjected, his voice tight with suppressed anger. “Mom and Dad didn't just want to spy on you. They consulted a family law attorney last fall to explore the legal framework for emergency grandparental rights and allegations of parental unfitness. They were logging your parenting routines, recording arguments, and cataloging every time you disciplined Lily, hoping to build a case that you and Daniel were emotionally unstable.”
Daniel slammed his palm flat against the table. The sharp bang echoed off the concrete walls.
“They were building a lawsuit against us? While pretending to want a relationship with our child?”
“It gets worse,” Miller continued, turning a page. “Look at this correspondence between Margaret and the attorney. They were planning an intervention with child protective services, using fabricated concerns about your home environment. The camera in the teddy bear was supposed to provide the ‘smoking gun’ video evidence inside your private home.”
The sheer, calculated malice of it took my breath away. These weren't overbearing grandparents acting out of misplaced love. This was a premeditated campaign of sabotage designed to strip us of our child and punish Daniel for daring to set boundaries.

“Can we use this in court?” I asked, my voice trembling with rage.
“We aren't just using it in court,” Aaron said grimly. “The prosecutor’s office has upgraded the charges. Along with wiretapping and invasion of privacy, they’re adding conspiracy to commit fraud and tampering with a minor. Warrants have been issued for their arrest.”
