Chapter 9 - Standing Beside the Boss

The fallout from Dante’s betrayal sent shockwaves through the New York underworld, but Antonio moved with the ruthless efficiency of a master chess player. Within forty-eight hours, every compromised asset was secured, the Chicago tribunal was sent a clear, unyielding message in the form of frozen accounts and severed ties, and the Russo syndicate emerged stronger, wealthier, and more unified than ever before.
On a crisp Friday afternoon, three weeks after the incident in the study, I stood in the sunlit foyer of the Bay Ridge estate, holding a large manila envelope bearing the official embossed seal of Columbia University School of Nursing.
My hands shook as I tore open the flap and pulled out the crisp parchment letter.
“Dear Sophia Miller, We are pleased to inform you that your financial hold has been cleared in full by the Russo Educational Trust, and your enrollment for the final semester is officially confirmed starting next month...”
A gasp escaped my lips. Tears pricked the corners of my eyes.
“Good news, I hope?”
I turned around to see Antonio walking down the grand staircase, dressed in a sharp charcoal suit, looking every bit the untouchable king of Brooklyn.
“My tuition,” I whispered, holding up the letter. “It’s paid. All of it. I’m going back to finish my degree.”
A slow, brilliant smile broke across Antonio’s face—a smile that completely transformed his harsh features into something warm, handsome, and entirely human. He crossed the foyer in three long strides, scooped me up into his arms, and spun me around as I laughed out loud, my arms wrapping tightly around his neck.
When he set me back down on my feet, he didn't let go of my waist.
“I told you,” Antonio murmured, his dark eyes locked onto mine with burning intensity. “Everything you need to succeed, you already have. But finishing your degree is only step one.”
“Step one?” I raised an eyebrow. “What’s step two?”
Antonio reached into the breast pocket of his jacket and pulled out a small, velvet-covered box. He didn’t open it right away. Instead, he dropped smoothly onto one knee right there on the polished marble floor of the foyer, ignoring every protocol of his syndicate empire.
“Antonio...” I breathed, my heart stopping.
“Sophie,” he said, his voice ringing clear and steady through the grand hall. “When you walked into Bellarosa restaurant eight months ago, you didn’t know who I was. You didn’t care about my money, my power, or my enemies. You saw an old woman whose hands were shaking, and you chose to help her.”
He flipped open the box. Resting on the black velvet was a breathtaking ring—a vintage platinum band encrusted with a magnificent, deep-blue sapphire flanked by brilliant-cut diamonds.
“You brought light into a house that had been cold and shadowed for years,” Antonio continued, looking up at me with absolute, unfiltered devotion. “You stood beside me through fire, betrayal, and war without ever blinking. I am a dangerous man, Sophie. My world is filled with enemies and shadows. But I promise you, with every breath I take... you will never walk in the dark alone again.”
He swallowed hard, waiting for my answer.
Tears spilled over my lashes, but my smile was radiant and absolute. I didn't hesitate for a single second.
“Yes,” I whispered, my voice thick with emotion. “Yes, Antonio. I’ll marry you.”

A cheer echoed from the parlor doorway, where Maria stood clapping her hands with tears streaming down her face, while Vane stood a few steps behind her, awkwardly trying to wipe away a stray tear with his massive thumb.
Antonio stood up, sliding the stunning ring onto my finger, and pulled me into a deep, fierce, breathtaking kiss that swept away every doubt, every fear, and every shadow of the past.
