Chapter 5 - The Walls Close In

George Winters did not take defeat lying down.

By the end of the first week, his high-priced legal team—led by a ruthless defense attorney named Julian Vance (no relation to Marcus)—filed an emergency motion to dismiss the lawsuit, claiming it was a “frivolous, fabricated shakedown by a disgruntled, financially unstable estranged daughter seeking media attention.”

They even submitted sworn affidavits from my mother Patricia and my Uncle Dennis, claiming that the incident was merely an “allegorical family anecdote blown out of proportion,” and that no dog food was ever actually served to the child.

Perjury. They were lying under oath to protect his ego and his bank account.

On Thursday afternoon, Marcus Vance called me into his office to review our counter-strategy.

“They’re trying to turn this into a he-said-she-said dispute,” Marcus said, tossing Julian Vance’s dismissal motion onto his desk in disgust. “They think they can out-lie us and out-spend us.”

“Can they?” I asked, my stomach tightening with anxiety.

“Not if we introduce the witness who has no reason to lie,” Marcus smiled, spinning his laptop around to face me.

On the screen was a video file.

“What is this?” I asked.

“Remember the hired server who was working the party on Friday night? A young college student named Elena Gomez?” Marcus asked. “When your father’s lawyers tried to pressure her into signing a false affidavit stating nothing happened, Elena did something smart. She recorded the entire conversation on her phone. And then she brought it straight to us.”

Marcus hit play.

The audio filled the office. My father’s booming, arrogant voice came through the speakers: “Elena, you’re a smart girl working your way through college. You don't want to ruin your career by getting mixed up in family drama. You just sign this paper stating you don't remember what was on that plate, and there’s five thousand dollars in cash waiting for you.”

Elena’s voice replied, clear and firm: “Mr. Winters, I saw what you put on that plate. I saw that little girl crying. I won't lie for you.”

“You sign it, or you’ll never work a hospitality job in this county again,” my father snapped before the recording cut out.

I stared at the screen, stunned. My father had not only abused my daughter; he had attempted to bribe and threaten a witness in an active legal proceeding.

“Subornation of perjury and witness tampering,” Marcus said, his eyes gleaming with triumphant satisfaction. “Julian Vance just walked his client straight into criminal territory. I’ve already forwarded this audio file to the State Attorney General’s office and the Riverside County District Attorney.”

The civil lawsuit was no longer just about a plate of dog food. It was about corruption, intimidation, and the absolute moral rot at the foundation of the Winters empire.
