Chapter 7 - The Confrontation in the Corridor

Before the armed man could reach the glass door of room four, the double elevators at the end of the hallway chimed with a crisp, echoing ding.
The doors slid open, and Detective Vance stepped out, weapon drawn, flanked by three uniformed local deputies with assault rifles raised.
"Drop the weapon! Drop it right now!" Vance bellowed, his voice echoing off the tile walls with terrifying authority.
The intruder froze, his hand hovering inches from the glass door. For a split second, he weighed his options—calculating the distance between himself and the exit, between himself and the armed officers. Then, slowly, with a look of venomous hatred, he let the pistol slide from his grip, letting it clatter loudly against the linoleum floor.
"You're a little late, Detective," the man sneer, raising his hands behind his head as deputies swarmed forward, slamming him against the wall and snapping steel cuffs onto his wrists. "The property is already cleared. The ledger won't save you."
"Your boss, Richard Sterling, is currently being picked up by state troopers at his corporate office as we speak," Vance replied, stepping past him with ice in his veins. "And your little burner phone text message? We intercepted it forty minutes ago."
The man’s arrogant smirk finally crumbled.
Vance pushed past the glass doors into the NICU. I was standing near the nurses' station, shaking from adrenaline, while the second intruder was already being pinned to the floor by hospital security near the emergency exit.
"Are the children safe?" Vance asked me breathlessly.
"Yes," I managed to say, my voice trembling. "They're still asleep. They didn't wake up through any of it."

Vance let out a long, shuddering breath, running a hand over his tired face. He looked through the glass at Lily, who had stirred slightly at the commotion but was still resting safely beneath her blankets.
"Good," Vance whispered. "Because the real fight is just beginning."
