Chapter 4 - The Counter-Strike

A week later, they received the notice they never expected: a formal cease-and-desist order combined with a petition for a restraining order, citing the police incident with Maisie as the foundation for the claim of emotional abuse.

The hearing was brutal. Beverly brought her "evidence"—a collection of gifts she claimed I had stolen from her, and bank statements showing years of "loans" she claimed I owed her. She tried to play the frail, abandoned mother.

But the judge was an older woman who had no patience for theatrics.

"Mrs. Miller," the judge said, peering over her glasses at my mother. "You called the police on a five-year-old child because of a doll? Is that the testimony you are standing by today?"

Beverly faltered. "It was... it was a matter of discipline. She needed to learn that actions have consequences."

"The only person learning about consequences today is you," the judge replied.

The restraining order was granted. They had to be out of the house within 48 hours. If they stepped within 500 feet of Maisie or me, they would face immediate arrest.

As they left the courtroom, Joanna tried to grab my arm. "You’ve destroyed us! Mom has no insurance, I have no car—you’re the one who is the monster, not us!"

I didn't flinch. I leaned in close, my voice low and steady. "You aren't victims of my cruelty. You are victims of your own greed. You chose a doll over a five-year-old girl. You’re lucky I didn't press charges for the abuse."
