Chapter 5 - The Secret Trust and Rick’s True Identity

With Diane and Chloe locked in county holding cells awaiting arraignment, the police department’s human trafficking task force moved swiftly to round up the rest of the conspiracy.

By noon the following day, Rick Miller had been apprehended at a Sacramento motel while attempting to flee the state with two passports and forty thousand dollars in cash wired from an offshore account.

Detective Vance called me into his precinct office to review the financial trail uncovered by the task force’s forensic accountants.

“Your mother wasn't just running a one-off scheme with Miller,” Vance explained, dropping a thick sheaf of bank statements onto the metal desk. “She had been working with his brokerage network for nearly a year. They specialized in targeting vulnerable, single-parent households—specifically mothers going through medical crises, divorces, or financial distress.”

“Why?” I asked, leaning over the papers. “Where did the money come from?”

“It goes deeper than that,” Vance said, turning a page to reveal a certified trust document bearing my late father’s signature. “Have you ever heard of the Eleanor and Arthur Hayes Family Trust?”

My eyebrows knitted together in confusion. “My father’s estate? Dad left everything to Mom when he passed away five years ago. At least, that’s what she told me.”

“That’s what she wanted you to believe,” Vance corrected grimly. “Your father left a secondary contingency trust specifically designated for his grandchildren—meaning Lily. It was a substantial portfolio consisting of commercial real estate holdings and liquid bonds valued at over two million dollars.”

The room seemed to tilt on its axis.

“Two million dollars?” I whispered.

“And who was the sole named trustee empowered to disburse funds from that trust until Lily turns eighteen?” Vance asked rhetorically, pointing a finger at the document. “Diane Hayes. But there was a catch in the trust agreement: if you, as Lily’s mother, ever remarried, relocated out of state, or legally contested Diane’s financial control over the estate, the trust automatically dissolved and reverted entirely to Diane’s personal ownership.”

The sickening puzzle pieces finally clicked into place.

Diane didn't just want to get rid of Lily because she was an inconvenient toddler throwing a tantrum. She wanted Lily permanently out of the picture so she could trigger the legal dissolution clause of my father’s trust, pocketing the two million dollars without interference, while using Rick Miller’s underground network to quietly place Lily into an untraceable, closed adoption system out of state.

They weren't playing a cruel prank. They were executing a meticulously planned financial heist using my daughter as collateral.

“Can we freeze the trust?” I asked, my voice shaking with rage.

“It’s already frozen by a judge's emergency order,” Vance assured me. “With Diane facing federal conspiracy and child trafficking charges, her asset control is entirely revoked. The court is transferring trusteeship directly to you, Emily.”

I exhaled a breath I felt like I had been holding for five years.

“When is the arraignment?”

“Tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m. in the Sacramento Superior Court,” Vance said. “And I have a feeling your mother is going to need a very good criminal defense lawyer—one she can't afford now that her accounts are frozen.”
