Chapter 4 - The Web of Collusion

Over the next forty-eight hours, the hospital room became a pressure cooker of external stress.
Though Detective Vance had placed a strict no-visitor order on my door, my phone buzzed incessantly on the bedside table. Screen notifications flashed like strobe lights: missed calls from aunts and uncles I hadn’t spoken to in years, text messages from cousins repeating my mother’s narrative, and long, guilt-tripping voice memos from my mother herself, playing the role of the heartbroken, misunderstood parent.
“Jolie, how can you let the police treat me like a criminal? I carried you for nine months. I gave up everything for you. Call off the detectives before you ruin our entire family name.”
I muted the phone, sliding it face down into the drawer.
My body felt like lead. The medical team confirmed I had suffered three fractured ribs, a broken wrist, a severe concussion, and extensive bruising along my spine and shoulders. Every movement required conscious effort and agonizing endurance. Yet, despite the physical pain, my mind was hyper-focused on Detective Vance’s parting words: “Modern architecture comes with a lot of security cameras, and not all of them belong to the people paying for the party.”
Who had secured the footage?
My thoughts drifted to my stepfather—a quiet, analytical man who had spent decades watching my mother manipulate family dynamics from behind the scenes. He hadn't been present at the baby shower, claiming a sudden illness, but he knew better than anyone how far my mother’s cruelty could stretch when her social image was threatened.
Late on the third evening, while the hospital ward was quiet and bathed in the soft blue glow of nightlights, the door clicked open.
I tensed, preparing for another nurse with medication or, worse, a smuggled relative who had bypassed security.
Instead, a tall, slender figure slipped quietly into the room, pulling the door shut behind them. It wasn't a police officer, nor was it a family member. It was the young man who had delivered my lunch tray earlier that afternoon—an intern or catering staff member from the restaurant downtown, wearing civilian clothes under a heavy wool coat.
He looked around nervously, checking the hallway through the small glass window in the door, before approaching my bed.
“Dr. Hill?” he whispered, his hands trembling slightly as he reached into his jacket pocket.
“Yes?” I asked, my heart skipping a beat. “Who are you?”
“My name is Leo,” he said, glancing back at the door one more time. “I work at the Grandview Restaurant. I was working the private dining event during your sister’s baby shower.”
“Are you here representing the restaurant?” I asked, bracing myself for a corporate liability warning.
“No,” Leo said quickly, shaking his head. “I’m here because I saw what happened. Or rather… I saw what happened on the security monitors before management tried to erase them.”
My breath caught in my throat. “Erase them?”
“Yeah,” Leo whispered, leaning closer. “Right after the ambulance left, the general manager locked himself in the security office. He took bribes from your family’s attorney to wipe the cloud drives and format the local hard drives of the balcony cameras. They wanted to protect the restaurant's luxury reputation and your mother’s social standing.”
He pulled a small, black USB flash drive from his pocket and laid it gently on the edge of my hospital tray table.
“How did you get that?” I breathed, staring at the small piece of plastic as if it were loaded with explosives.
“I’m the IT assistant for the venue,” Leo said with a faint, determined smile. “I set up the redundant off-site backups for our security feeds. When I saw the manager trying to purge the system for Camera 4—the exact camera angled across the entire length of the west balcony—I made a manual override copy. I knew what they were doing. I couldn't let them get away with attempted murder.”

He tapped the flash drive gently with his finger.
“It’s all on there, Dr. Hill. Every second of it. Crystal clear, high-definition audio and video. The hair-pulling, the insults, the shove… everything.”
