Chapter 5 - The Neighbor’s Digital Witness

While Andrew stared blankly at his dead cell phone in the Providence kitchen, completely unaware of how to process the sudden evaporation of his financial empire, another piece of evidence was quietly making its way into my father’s email inbox.

At 11:15 AM, my phone chimed with a high-priority notification.

It was an email from Mrs. Gable, our next-door neighbor in Providence. Mrs. Gable was a retired federal archivist who kept her property under surveillance with military-grade security cameras, largely to protect her prize-winning rose garden from local deer.

I tapped open the attachment.

It was a high-definition video file titled Security_Export_Dec24_2310.mp4.

Calvin plugged my phone into his desktop monitor, expanding the video to full screen.

The footage was breathtakingly crisp. The night-vision infrared camera captured our driveway in crystal-clear detail, illuminated by the amber glow of the streetlights against the falling snow.

In the center of the frame stood Andrew, leaning casually against the open front doorway, holding a glass of scotch while watching the scene unfold. Beside him, Margaret Collins could be seen aggressively stuffing diapers, pink pajamas, and winter coats into black contractor bags.

Then came the audio—amplified by Mrs. Gable’s sensitive perimeter microphones, capturing every word with horrifying clarity.

“Please do not create a scene,” Margaret’s voice hissed from the speakers. “Andrew has been unhappy for a long time, and everyone deserves the chance to begin again.”

“Where do you expect Lily and me to go tonight?” my voice trembled on the recording.

“You still have a father,” Margaret snapped, shoving a contractor bag toward my chest.

Then, Andrew’s voice cut through the winter wind, flat and devoid of emotion: “I have made my choice, Hannah.”

The camera captured every agonizing second of me walking away into the blinding snowstorm, dragging the damaged suitcase and the trash bags, while Andrew casually closed the front door behind me, locking the deadbolt with a firm, resounding click before turning back inside to join Vanessa.

Calvin watched the screen in absolute, chilling silence. When the video ended, he let out a slow, heavy breath.

“This isn't just a standard marital dispute anymore,” Calvin said, his eyes gleaming with prosecutorial intent. “This is documented psychological abuse, willful endangerment of a minor, and coordinated domestic expulsion. If we present this video to a family court judge alongside the medical records proving Lily’s core body temperature was dangerously low when she arrived here, the court won't just grant you emergency custody—they’ll strip Andrew of every visitation right until he undergoes mandatory psychiatric evaluations.”

“Can we use it immediately?” I asked, feeling a fierce, protective maternal instinct surge through my veins.

“We are going to use it at the emergency injunction hearing tomorrow morning,” Calvin replied, hitting the save button. “Your husband wanted a dramatic exit for you and your daughter. We are going to give him a permanent exit from our lives.”
