Chapter 6 - The Burn Specialist and the New Dawn

One year after the trial.
The autumn sun cast a brilliant, golden light across the newly completed North Wing of St. Jude’s Regional Burn and Trauma Center. The exterior was a stunning blend of modern glass and warm stone, bearing a plaque carved into the polished granite near the main entrance:
The Vivian Hawthorne Advanced Trauma and Reconstructive Research Institute. Dedicated to healing, resilience, and the unyielding pursuit of justice.
I stood on the wide glass-enclosed balcony of the third-floor director’s suite, wearing a cream silk blouse, holding a cup of black coffee.
The door behind me opened softly.
Dr. Julian Vance stepped onto the balcony, holding a fresh stack of clinical trial reports. He wore a crisp white lab coat over a tailored navy suit, his expression bright and focused.
“The first batch of bio-engineered skin grafts for our trauma recovery patients just cleared FDA fast-track approval, Vivian,” Julian said with an enthusiastic smile. “We’re officially admitting our first thirty patients next Monday.”
I turned, looking out over the sprawling hospital gardens where patients walked along the paved stone paths, free from pain, free from fear, rebuilding their lives with dignity.
“That’s wonderful, Julian,” I said, resting my coffee cup on the glass railing. “Make sure the funding for the indigent care endowment is fully prioritized. Nobody who walks through those doors should ever feel like they have nowhere else to turn.”
Julian nodded, his eyes filled with profound respect. “It’s incredible to think that just a year ago, this entire wing was just an empty blueprint.”
“Not a blueprint,” I corrected softly, tracing the smooth skin of my right hand where the scars had long since faded into invisible memories. “An investment.”
He smiled, leaning against the railing beside me. “So, what’s next on the agenda for the formidable Mrs. Hawthorne? Are you taking a vacation, or are you going to audit another corrupt conglomerate just for fun?”
May you like
I looked out toward the horizon, where the river caught the bright afternoon sun, stretching endlessly toward the open ocean.
“No vacations, Julian,” I said, a quiet, confident smile touching my lips. “I’m just getting started.”
