Chapter 10 - The New Empire

A year after the day my wedding dress burned in the bridal suite, I stood on the balcony of my new penthouse apartment overlooking Lake Erie.
The wind off the water was crisp, carrying the clean scent of autumn and open space.
My phone buzzed on the patio table beside me. I picked it up and saw a notification from the corporate registry: Sterling & Vance Enterprises officially restructured and rebranded under new executive leadership.
Margaret was spending her days folding laundry in a federal facility three hours away. Jason was living a quiet, isolated life in upstate New York, far removed from the high-stakes corporate world he had never truly learned to navigate on his own terms.
And I was right here.
I hadn't married into an empire. I didn't need a famous last name or a mother-in-law’s approval to validate my place in the world. I had built my own foundation, brick by brick, choice by choice, proof by proof.
I tapped the screen of my phone, opened my calendar, and looked at the date.
It was a Saturday.

There was no white chapel waiting for me. No floral arrangements, no guest lists filled with judgmental socialites, and no secret plots unfolding behind closed doors.
There was just my life, my work, my peace, and the absolute certainty that no matter what fire life tried to throw my way, I knew how to walk right through it and keep moving forward.
