Chapter 7 - The Deposition of Judith Carter

By Monday morning, the legal battle shifted from the courtroom to the stark, fluorescent-lit conference rooms of downtown Portland for formal depositions.
Judith Carter arrived wearing an expensive navy blue pantsuit, her silver hair styled in a severe, immaculate chignon, carrying herself with the rigid posture of a woman who believed the world owed her absolute obedience. Her attorney, a slick corporate litigator named Harrison, sat beside her flipping through a thick legal binder.
Francine and I sat across the table. I wore a crisp white blazer, my posture relaxed, my mind anchored by the memory of Meadow planting tulip bulbs in the sunlight.
"We are recording," the stenographer announced, her fingers hovering over the machine.
Francine began the questioning. She didn't start with aggressive accusations; she started with gentle, methodical traps.
"Mrs. Carter, let’s establish your residency timeline," Francine began, her voice smooth and conversational. "You moved into the Elmhurst Lane residence approximately fourteen months ago, correct?"
"I moved in to assist my son and daughter-in-law in maintaining household stability," Judith replied coolly, her chin tilted upward. "Someone needed to bring order to a chaotic domestic environment."
"And during that time, you assumed primary oversight of the minor child, Meadow?"
"I provided guidance and necessary structure," Judith corrected sharply. "Guidance that the mother was clearly incapable of delivering due to her permissive nature."
Harrison, Judith’s attorney, leaned back with a smug expression, clearly believing this was standard family law posturing.
Francine stood up, walked over to the AV cart in the corner of the room, and plugged in one of the encrypted flash drives we had pulled from the attic surveillance hub.
"Let’s talk about that structure, Mrs. Carter," Francine said quietly.
She pressed play on the projector.
The conference room wall lit up with high-definition video footage dated three months prior. It showed the interior of Meadow’s bedroom. On the screen, Judith could be seen towering over eight-year-old Meadow, twisting the child’s wrist behind her back until she sobbed, while demanding she complete her schoolwork in total silence.
The color drained instantly from Judith’s face. The haughty, untouchable matriarch mask cracked down the center.
"Where... where did you get that?" Judith gasped, half-rising from her chair.
Harrison whipped his head around, staring at the screen in horror as the audio filled the room with Judith’s harsh, berating voice echoing off the drywall.
"That is an illegal recording!" Harrison barked, slamming his hand on the table. "Objection! Inadmissible surveillance without consent!"
"Actually, Counsel," Francine replied smoothly, walking back to her seat and dropping a stack of printed disclosures onto the table, "under state law, monitoring equipment installed inside a primary family dwelling by a legal homeowner with full administrative access constitutes valid evidentiary documentation of child endangerment and physical abuse. Furthermore, since your client was the one who installed and administered the surveillance network, she had full knowledge of its operation."
Judith stared at the screen, trembling. She opened her mouth to speak, but no sound came out.
Francine leaned across the table, her eyes locking onto Judith’s wide, panicked eyes.

"Now, Mrs. Carter," Francine said softly. "Let’s review the footage from the afternoon of May 14th, when you took electric clippers to your granddaughter's head and cut her scalp. Shall we play that for the record as well?"
Judith slumped back into her chair, her arrogance entirely evaporated. She looked over at her attorney, but Harrison was already frantically whispering to her, realizing they had walked straight into a legal buzzsaw with zero defense left.
