Chapter 9 - Rebuilding the Manor

Three months later.

The early morning sun streamed through the newly restored stained-glass windows of Crestview Manor, painting the hardwood floors in brilliant hues of ruby red, sapphire blue, and warm gold.

The house had undergone a complete transformation.

The cheap, modern furniture that Diane and Gerald had brought into the home five years ago had been completely removed, donated to local veteran housing shelters. In its place stood elegant, restored mid-century antiques, grand bookshelves filled with leather-bound financial treatises, and large, bright oil paintings of coastal landscapes.

The kitchen island where the incident had occurred was gone—replaced by a sprawling, custom-built soapstone workspace surrounded by warm oak cabinetry.

I stood near the kitchen window, wearing a comfortable cashmere sweater, drinking a warm cup of coffee. The scar on my right cheek had faded into a faint, thin silver line—barely visible unless you looked closely in the bright light.

A knock sounded on the front door.

I walked into the foyer, unlocked the keyless deadbolt, and opened the door.

Standing on the porch was Clara—a brilliant, twenty-nine-year-old senior systems architect who had just left Microsoft to join my new firm, Reed Global Intelligence. Behind her stood two moving technicians carrying three heavy server racks.

"Good morning, Chloe!" Clara smiled warmly, adjusting her glasses. "The encrypted fiber-optic lines were approved by the city this morning! We are ready to install the primary server array in the lower level!"

"Welcome, Clara," I smiled, stepping aside to let them in. "The basement office is fully prepped and climate-controlled."

Over the past three months, using the eight point four million dollar escrow payout, I had launched Reed Global Intelligence—an independent forensic investigation firm specializing in recovering assets stolen from vulnerable estates, non-profit trusts, and elderly victims of corporate fraud.

We already had six full-time auditors on payroll, four major corporate clients on retainer, and a waiting list of cases stretching through the end of the year.

As Clara and the technicians carried the equipment downstairs, my phone buzzed on the kitchen counter.

It was a formal notification from the State Department of Corrections.

Inmate Status Update: Gerald Cole sentenced to 8 years at State Penitentiary. Vanessa Cole sentenced to 3 years probation with 500 hours community service and full restitution order. Diane Miller currently serving Month 4 of 12-month sentence at County Correctional Facility.

I looked at the screen for a brief second, feeling no surge of triumph, no lingering sting of bitterness, and no regret.

They were where they belonged—facing the natural consequences of the choices they had made when they thought no one was watching.

I slid the phone into my pocket, walked out onto the stone patio overlooking the back garden, and took a deep breath of the crisp, clean morning air.

The garden was coming back to life. White lilies and wild beach roses were blooming along the stone wall that my grandmother had built forty years ago.
