PART 2: The Diagnosis Nobody Expected

Forty minutes later, they rushed through the emergency department.

Doctors moved quickly.

Nurses asked questions.

Ultrasounds were ordered.

Blood tests followed.

Hours passed.

Olivia lay in a hospital bed while Ethan sat beside her.

Neither slept.

Around midnight, a vascular specialist entered the room.

His expression was serious.

Very serious.

Ethan immediately stood.

"What is it?"

The doctor pulled up a chair.

"Mrs. Carter, you have a deep vein thrombosis."

Olivia blinked.

"A what?"

"A blood clot."

The words seemed to echo.

Ethan's stomach dropped.

The doctor continued carefully.

"The clot is located in your leg."

"If it breaks loose and travels to your lungs, it could become life-threatening."

The room went silent.

Margaret sat frozen in the corner.

Her face drained of color.

A blood clot.

Not normal swelling.

Not pregnancy discomfort.

A blood clot that had been growing for weeks.

Olivia's hands trembled.

"What about my baby?"

The doctor softened slightly.

"Right now your daughter is stable."

"But we need to begin treatment immediately."

Margaret suddenly covered her mouth.

Tears filled her eyes.

All evening she had insisted nothing was wrong.

All evening she had encouraged Olivia to stay home.

And now she understood how dangerous that advice had been.

The doctor continued.

"Honestly..."

He paused.

"If you'd waited another day or two, the outcome might have been very different."

Olivia felt Ethan squeeze her hand.

Neither needed the doctor to finish the sentence.

They both understood.

She could have died.

Their baby could have died.

Because everyone assumed it was normal.

May you like

Except Ethan.

For the first time that night, Margaret began to cry.
