Chapter 6 - The Web Tightens

The fallout of Tuesday morning’s boardroom confrontation was swift, catastrophic for the conspirators, and thorough.
By noon, federal agents had raided Richard Sterling’s corporate offices at Sterling Trans-Global, seizing servers, financial ledgers, and communication logs that revealed a multi-year pattern of hostile takeovers, corporate espionage, and illegal stock manipulation. Sterling was denied bail, facing up to twenty-five years in federal prison.
Claire, despite her cooperation and full confession, was formally indicted on multiple felony counts of conspiracy, reckless endangerment, and administering a noxious substance. While her sentence would likely be reduced due to her turning state's witness against Sterling, she was facing significant prison time—and more importantly, she was completely, permanently cut out of our family and our lives.
Back at the Aegis Logistics headquarters, the remaining board members voted unanimously to reaffirm my position as CEO and majority voting shareholder, passing emergency governance reforms to ensure no outside corporate raider could ever weaponize family dynamics against the company again.
By late Thursday afternoon, the whirlwind had finally settled.
Michael and I drove back to our suburban home. The heavy, lingering anxiety that had hung over the property since the birthday party had been replaced by the quiet, comforting routine of everyday life.
When we walked through the front door, the first sound we heard was sweet, high-pitched laughter.
“Mom! Dad!”
Hannah came running down the hallway, her curls bouncing, wearing her favorite pink pajamas. She looked pale, but her eyes sparkled with health and vibrant energy. She threw her arms around my waist, burying her face in my jacket.
I dropped to my knees, wrapping my arms around her so tightly I never wanted to let go.
“Hey, sweet girl,” I whispered, kissing the top of her head. “How are you feeling?”
“I’m good, Mom! Can we play unicorn games in the living room?” she asked eagerly.
I smiled, a genuine, profound smile that reached my eyes for the first time in a week. “Anything you want, sweetheart. Go grab your stuffed rabbit, and Dad and I will be right there.”
As Hannah scampered off down the hall, Michael walked up behind me, resting his hands gently on my shoulders. He looked down at me with deep, unwavering affection.
“You did it, Agent Vance,” he murmured softly. “The case is closed.”

I leaned back against him, closing my eyes as I breathed in the familiar, grounding scent of him.
“Not quite yet, husband,” I replied, a quiet, fierce smile touching my lips. “There’s just one last celebration left to finish.”
