Chapter 5 - The Industrial Ghost Town

The snowstorm had broken by dawn, leaving behind a blinding expanse of white that stretched across the jagged peaks and choked the valley roads.

Mara stayed behind at the estate with Lily and the two infants, who were now stabilized and resting comfortably under the care of the arriving federal medical team. I, however, had packed my trauma bag, loaded my grandfather’s rifle into the back of my reinforced SUV, and followed the coordinates encoded on the micro-SD card straight into the heart of the city’s abandoned steel district.

The address pointed to a sprawling, defunct smelting plant nestled against the freezing banks of the river.

According to the federal database records Agent Miller had texted me en route, this facility had been officially condemned in 2018. But as I pulled my vehicle into the shadow of a rusted loading dock, I saw the telltale tracks of heavy cargo vans cutting through the fresh snow toward a reinforced garage entrance at the rear of the main furnace building.

No guards were visible outside, but the security cameras mounted along the brick cornices were actively tracking my approach.

I cut the engine, grabbed my tactical flashlight and sidearm, and stepped out into the freezing morning air. My boots crunched loudly on the ice as I made my way toward a rusted personnel door marked FIRE EXIT – ALARM OFF.

I tested the handle. It gave way with a heavy, oiled click.

Inside, the air was thick with the metallic stench of ozone, industrial bleach, and stale heating oil. The vast, cavernous floor of the smelting plant had been retrofitted. Rows of high-tech incubator units, fluorescent medical lighting, and mobile diagnostic monitors stretched across the polished concrete where blast furnaces once stood.

It was a subterranean hospital built inside an industrial shell—a ghost clinic operating entirely outside the laws of medicine and humanity.

"Hello?" I called out, my voice echoing off the corrugated metal walls. "Is anyone here?"

From the shadows near a central nursing station, a figure stepped forward.

She wore a rumpled white lab coat over a torn grey sweater. Her hair was pulled back in a messy knot, dark circles bruised beneath her eyes, and her lips were cracked and pale. But as the overhead lights caught her face, my breath hitched in my throat.

"Sarah," I whispered.

My younger sister stopped dead in her tracks. She stared at me as if I were a ghost conjured by her own feverish exhaustion.

"Nathan?" she breathed, her voice cracking. "How... how did you find me? Marcus said... Marcus said he killed you."

I crossed the distance between us in three long strides, pulling her into my arms. She felt impossibly light, fragile as dry glass, trembling violently against my chest.

"He lied," I murmured into her hair, my own eyes burning with hot, unhedged tears. "I got Lily. She made it to the gates, Sarah. Your little girl saved everyone."

Sarah pulled back, her hands gripping my forearms with desperate urgency. "She made it? Oh, thank God... thank God. But Nathan, you shouldn't be here. The security grid—it's tied to Marcus’s primary server. If he’s arrested, the automated protocol—"

Before she could finish the sentence, the overhead lights flickered violently from white to a deep, pulsing crimson.

A synthetic, automated voice boomed from the facility's public address speakers:
