Chapter 3 - The Unraveling

The fallout was immediate and catastrophic. Arthur wasn't just exposing them; he was dismantling their entire reality. He had pre-arranged for a private auditor to be waiting in the driveway, a man who now walked into the dining room with a stack of subpoenas that looked like thick, white bricks.

"The painting wasn't just a painting," Arthur continued, his eyes finally locking onto his daughter’s. "It was the last piece of art Caleb had left in a house that has been systematically stripping him of his spirit for years. I’ve spent the better part of a decade documenting this dysfunction, hoping that by the time I was gone, you would have matured. But I see now that maturity is a quality you have no interest in acquiring."

Mom tried to protest, her voice shrill and desperate, blaming the economy, blaming the house upkeep, even blaming Caleb for being "too sensitive" about a "silly hobby." But the auditor ignored her, beginning to read aloud the bank transfers—the luxury vacations in the Maldives, the secret offshore accounts, the systematic draining of the family legacy. The guests, who had come for a lavish birthday celebration, began to slip away into the night, terrified of being caught in the blast radius of the financial implosion taking place in the dining room.

I looked at Caleb. He was sitting on my lap now, his face buried in my chest to muffle the sound of his mother and aunt arguing with the auditor. He didn't understand the legal terminology or the impending prison sentences. He only knew that the "scary Grandpa" was now the only person in the room who saw him—and he was acting like a storm that would wash everything away.
