Chapter 9 - The Courtroom Battle for Guardianship

The audio file was handed over to the U.S. Attorney’s office within the hour. It wasn't just proof of domestic coercion and financial fraud; it was a flashing neon sign pointing toward premeditated malice.
While federal agents tracked Blake’s shell company jets across the Caribbean, I faced a different kind of battlefield: a packed, high-stakes probate courtroom in downtown Chicago.
I was fighting for emergency, permanent legal guardianship of my sister and her unborn child, seeking to completely sever Blake Hayes’s parental rights and financial control before the baby arrived.
Judge Sarah Sterling (no relation, thankfully) sat behind the mahogany bench, her expression grim as she reviewed the mountain of evidence submitted by my legal team and Detective Miller.
Blake’s high-priced defense attorney, a silver-haired shark named Sterling Vance (no relation to Marcus Vance either, though the legal web was entirely intertwined), stood at the opposing table trying desperately to hold his case together.
“Your Honor, my client denies all allegations of conspiracy,” Vance argued smoothly, adjusting his silk tie. “The audio recording presented by the petitioner is five years old—recorded prior to the tragic accident that left Mrs. Hayes in her current medical condition. It has no bearing on her present circumstances, nor does it prove Mr. Hayes had any knowledge of—let alone involvement in—her subsequent medical developments.”
“Mr. Vance,” Judge Sterling interrupted, her voice cutting through the courtroom like ice. “Your client fled the jurisdiction on a private charter jet thirty minutes after federal arrest warrants were issued. He is currently a fugitive from justice. Do you really expect this court to entertain arguments about his parental rights while he is hiding from the FBI?”
Vance swallowed hard. “He is exercising his constitutional right to—l—”
“He is a fugitive,” the judge repeated firmly. “Furthermore, based on the sworn affidavits of Dr. Mira Feldman, the physical evidence recovered from Briarwood, and the audio files confirming a history of severe domestic coercion, this court finds clear and convincing evidence that Mr. Hayes poses an immediate, catastrophic danger to both Natalie Hayes and her unborn child.”
Judge Sterling picked up her heavy wooden gavel.
“I hereby grant full, unconditional medical, financial, and personal guardianship of Natalie Hayes, as well as temporary emergency custody of the unborn child upon delivery, to her sister, Lauren Sterling. All spousal access rights for Blake Hayes are hereby revoked indefinitely. Bail is denied upon his eventual apprehension.”

Bang.
The gavel came down. The courtroom erupted into a quiet flurry of motion as my attorney squeezed my shoulder and whispered, “We won, Lauren. You got her back.”
