Chapter 4 - The System Moves

The next morning, the reality of what my family was up against began to take shape.
I met with Sarah Jennings, a fiercely dedicated victim-advocate attorney provided through a legal defense network for children. We sat in a small consultation room near the pediatric unit while Emma slept under the care of a dedicated nurse.
“Vanessa was formally booked at county jail late last night,” Sarah told me, opening a crisp blue folder. “Her initial arraignment is scheduled for tomorrow morning. Your father has already hired Marcus Vance—one of the most expensive defense attorneys in the state.”
I leaned back, taking a breath. “What’s his strategy?”
“Vance is going to attempt three things,” Sarah explained carefully. “First, he will claim the video footage was obtained illegally without consent. Second, he will claim Vanessa suffered a sudden medical episode or accidental loss of physical control. Third, he will try to frame you as an unstable, vindictive mother who is exaggerating a minor household accident for financial gain.”
“Can he get the video thrown out?” I asked, a knot forming in my stomach.
“No,” Sarah said with absolute confidence. “The camera was in a common area of a house where you were a permitted guest, installed with your own funds on your own account. More importantly, under state law, expectation of privacy does not protect acts of severe violent crime against minors. The video is rock-solid.”
She pulled out a secondary document. “However, Vance is playing dirty elsewhere. Your parents filed an emergency motion with Child Protective Services this morning, alleging that you are an unfit mother who placed Emma in a dangerous environment.”
A cold surge of rage flushed through my veins. “They claim I put her in danger? By bringing her to her grandparents' house for breakfast?”
“It’s a standard intimidation tactic,” Sarah said gently, placing her hand over mine. “They want to scare you into making a deal. They want you so terrified of losing Emma to the state that you’ll agree to sign an affidavit saying the skillet incident was an accident.”
“They don't know who they're dealing with anymore,” I said, my voice hardening. “What do we do?”
“We hit back harder,” Sarah replied. “I’m filing an emergency petition for a permanent Order of Protection against Vanessa, your mother, and your father. It will prohibit any of them from coming within fifteen hundred feet of you, Emma, her daycare, or your home. Additionally, Detective Hayes found something interesting during Vanessa’s background check.”
I looked up. “What?”
“Three years ago, when Vanessa lived in another county, a pediatrician filed a confidential report regarding suspicious injuries on her daughter, Lily,” Sarah revealed. “Your father used his political connections and a quiet financial settlement to make that investigation disappear before charges were filed. The prosecutor in Emma’s case has just subpoenaed those sealed records.”

I closed my eyes, a sickening feeling washing over me. They hadn't just protected Vanessa yesterday. They had been protecting a monster for years, sacrificing every innocent person around her to maintain their immaculate family crest.
“Let them bring Marcus Vance,” I whispered, opening my eyes. “Let them bring everything they have. I’m going to tear their sanctuary down stone by stone.”
