Chapter 6 - The Sister's Collapse

By Thursday, the financial web Daniel and Vanessa had constructed was collapsing like a house of cards in a hurricane.

With the law firm placing Daniel on unpaid suspension, his corporate credit cards frozen, and the medical trust accounts locked by court order, Vanessa found herself completely cut off from the stream of stolen money that had financed her life.

At 4:00 PM, my doorbell rang continuously.

I checked the security monitor on my kitchen wall. Vanessa was standing on my porch, her hair messy, wearing sweatpants and an oversized hoodie, screaming at the camera.

I pulled open the heavy oak door, leaving the iron security gate locked between us.

"Open this door, Emma!" Vanessa shrieked, banging her fists against the iron bars. "You revoked my credit card! My landlord just served me an eviction notice! The bank repossessed my Porsche this morning!"

I looked at her through the bars. The glamour was entirely gone. Without the expensive makeup, the hair extensions, and the designer clothes, she looked small, bitter, and pathetic.

"Those were never your credit cards, Vanessa," I said quietly. "They were paid for by Sofia's heart surgery fund. The bank didn't repossess your car—the receiver seized it as stolen property."

"She was MY daughter!" Vanessa screamed, tears smearing her mascara across her face. "I had the right to use that money! I was her mother! I sacrificed my career, my body, my youth to have that sick child! I deserved something in return!"

A dark, heavy silence fell over the porch.

I stared at my sister, feeling the absolute last thread of familial bond snap inside my heart.

"You sacrificed nothing," I said, my voice dropping so low it sounded like grinding stone. "You gave her to me when she was two months old because her crying interfered with your weekend parties. I brought her to every doctor. I stayed awake for seventy-two hours straight when her lungs collapsed. I held her hand when she took her last breath while you were getting a tan in St. Lucia."

"Daniel seduced me!" Vanessa sobbed, shifting her tactics instantly, dropping to her knees on the stone steps. "He manipulated me, Emma! He told me you didn't love him! He told me he would take care of me and Sofia if I let him manage the trust! Please, sister... help me! Don't let them put me in prison! I'm your sister!"

"I don't have a sister," I said.

I reached into my pocket, pulled out a clear plastic bag containing a small, gold-plated heart necklace, and tossed it through the iron bars. It landed on the stone steps right in front of her knees.

"Sofia wanted you to have that," I said. "She bought it with her allowance money at the hospital gift shop two days before she died. She thought you'd like it because it was shiny."

Vanessa stared at the cheap necklace resting in the dust. Her chest heaved as she let out a sharp, ragged sob, finally realizing the true depth of what she had traded away.

"The grand jury convenes on Monday, Vanessa," I told her, stepping back into the foyer. "You should spend the weekend packing. Federal prisons don't allow designer luggage."

I shut the heavy oak door, locking the deadbolts one by one.
