Chapter 4 - The Digital Siege

Nathan’s absence over the next week was the longest agony of my life. I was trapped in a cycle of interrogations where detectives tried to wear me down, presenting me with "evidence" of my supposed mental breakdown. They showed me photos of the scene—my parents had staged it perfectly. A broken mug, a spilled thermos, and Megan, sitting on the sofa with a staged bandage on her arm, looking like a saint suffering at the hands of a demon. They wanted me to confess, to "take responsibility" and get a plea deal.

But I knew the truth, and Nathan was out there, working in the shadows. He didn't just find the backup; he found a goldmine. While I sat in the dark, Nathan was conducting a digital siege. He contacted a firm that specialized in data recovery and forensic authentication. He didn't just want the audio; he needed it verified by a third-party expert so that no judge could claim it was edited.

He found more than just the audio of the attack. Because the phone was in my pocket, it had been recording for fifteen minutes before I even brought up the pregnancy. It had caught the entire conversation leading up to the incident. It caught my mother complaining about the "bother" of having me over, it caught Megan whining about her lifestyle, and it captured the exact moment my father suggested, "Maybe it’s time she finally understands her place."

It was a pre-meditated strike, a blueprint of a family’s rot. Nathan didn't go to the local police—he knew better. George Collins had the Chief of Police on his speed dial. Instead, Nathan took the files to the State Attorney General’s office, along with a digital footprint showing that my mother had been in contact with a high-profile criminal defense attorney before the police were even called.

The news of the leak hit the local papers like a shockwave. My parents had spent ten days building a castle of lies, but they hadn't realized that the foundation was built on sand. Nathan’s forensic report turned the entire narrative inside out. When the news broke that the "star witnesses" were actually the perpetrators of a massive perjury and assault cover-up, the local precinct was forced to look the other way. The Attorney General took personal oversight of the case. I wasn't just being defended anymore; I was being vindicated. The siege was over, and the walls were beginning to collapse.
