Chapter 8 - The Auditor’s Report Drops

By Thursday morning, the federal and corporate investigations had moved from private conference rooms into the glaring light of public record.
At 9:00 a.m. sharp, an emergency joint press conference was held at the Whitaker Global Logistics headquarters. Microphones from CNN, Bloomberg, the Chicago Tribune, and local news affiliates lined the long walnut podium in the main auditorium.
I stood at the center of the stage, flanked by Marcus Vance and our chief corporate legal counsel, Arthur Vance.
Flashbulbs popped like rolling thunder. Reporters shouted questions over one another, their voices bouncing off the high auditorium ceilings.
“Miss Whitaker! Is it true that Whitaker Logistics is pressing federal charges against your sister?”
“What is the exact financial scope of the embezzlement?”
“Has Mr. Richard Whitaker stepped down permanently?”
I raised my hand slightly. The auditorium quieted down instantly.
“Good morning,” I began, my voice steady, clear, and projected evenly across the room. “Effective 8:00 a.m. today, Whitaker Global Logistics has formally submitted a comprehensive forensic audit report to the United States Department of Justice, detailing three million, eight hundred and forty thousand dollars in systematic corporate embezzlement, wire fraud, and identity theft committed by former executive affiliates associated with V&C Holdings.”
A wall of camera shutters clicked furiously.
“Let me be entirely clear,” I continued, looking directly into the primary camera lens broadcasting live across the nation. “For years, our company has operated under the belief that family ties supersede corporate governance. That era has ended. At Whitaker Logistics, accountability applies to everyone—regardless of their last name, their social circle, or what dress they planned to wear to a wedding.”
I turned the podium over to Marcus Vance, who detailed the technical mechanics of the shell corporation, the forged digital signatures, and the offshore wire transfers to Miami.
By the time the press conference concluded forty-five minutes later, the story was already trending number one nationwide on social media.

As I stepped off the stage and walked back toward the private executive elevator, my phone buzzed with an incoming text message from an unknown number.
I opened it.
It was a text from Vanessa.
“You’ve ruined my life, you happy little monster. Dad is going to cut you out of the will the second he realizes what you’ve done. Watch your back.”
I stared at the screen for three seconds, tapped the icon for Block Contact, and then deleted the thread entirely.
