Chapter 6 - The Wedding Day Reckoning

Saturday afternoon arrived under a cloudless blue sky.
The wedding of Camille Carter and Ethan Whitmore was scheduled for 3:00 PM in the grand garden amphitheater of Grandview Manor.
At 2:15 PM, a black sleek sedan pulled up to the security gate of the estate.
I sat in the back seat wearing an immaculate, tailored emerald-green silk dress. Beside me sat Lena, wearing a gorgeous pale blue dress we had bought together the day before—not the one Camille had forced me to pay for, but a dress Lena had picked out herself because she loved the way it spun when she danced.
The security guard at the gate recognized my car and immediately pressed the button, lifting the gate arm and bowing his head respectfully as we passed.
"Are we really going, Mom?" Lena asked softly, looking out the tinted window at the sprawling green lawns of Grandview Manor.
"We are," I said, taking her small hand in mine. "We are going as honored guests, Lena. And today, everyone in that room is going to learn who you are."
When we walked through the main doors of the estate, the atmosphere inside was electric with tension.
The main foyer was filled with nearly two hundred high-society guests, corporate executives, press reporters, and local politicians. But instead of joyful celebration, the room was buzzing with anxious whispers.
"Have you heard?" a woman in a velvet dress whispered to her husband near the fountain. "Whitmore Real Estate was served with a federal freezing order an hour ago!"
"I heard Harrison Sterling resigned from the North Coast bank board this morning!" another man replied. "The entire deal is collapsing!"
Near the grand staircase, Ethan Whitmore stood surrounded by three of his senior attorneys, his collar unbuttoned, his face pale and sweating. Vivian Whitmore was sitting on a sofa nearby, fanning herself furiously while my mother fed her smelling salts.
Camille stood at the top of the stairs in her silk wedding gown. Her veil was slightly crooked, her eyes were swollen, and she was frantically looking around the room for the missing vendors who had pulled out due to non-payment.
Then, Arthur Vance and Harrison Sterling walked into the foyer—not as guests, but accompanied by two senior managing partners from Apex Harbor Capital.
"Where is the managing director?" Arthur Vance demanded loudly, looking around the room. "The board secretary said she was arriving at 2:30!"
Ethan rushed over, stammering. "Mr. Vance! Please! We can fix the financial disclosures! Just give us until Monday!"
"Get away from me, Ethan!" Vance snapped, shoving Ethan's hand aside. "I’m not here for you! The principal owner of Apex Harbor Capital is here to sign the final receivership order for your firm!"
At that exact moment, Mark, the general manager of Grandview Manor, stepped onto the central landing of the grand staircase.
He held a microphone, his voice echoing clearly across the vast, marble foyer.
"Ladies and gentlemen, quiet please," Mark announced. "It is my honor to introduce the Founder, Principal Partner, and Managing Director of Apex Harbor Capital, as well as the majority owner of North Coast Regional Bank and Grandview Manor..."
The room went completely silent.
Ethan looked up. Vivian stopped fanning herself. Camille leaned over the banister, frowning in confusion. My parents stood near the archway, looking lost.

Mark extended his hand toward the main entrance.
"Ms. Brenna Carter."
