Chapter 4 - Unearthing the Past

Later that afternoon, while Noah was at school, I began the grim task of gathering financial documents and correspondence in preparation for filing for divorce.
Michael had left his home office computer unlocked.
As I sat at his desk compiling tax returns and bank statements, a notification popped up in the corner of his screen—an archived email folder labeled Family Trust & Inheritance.
Curiosity, mixed with a nagging sense of unease, made me click it.
What I found inside made my blood run cold.
It was a chain of emails between Michael and Patricia dating back over three years—right around the time Michael and I were finalizing Noah’s adoption.
Patricia’s emails were scathing, filled with demands and financial threats. “If you legally adopt that boy and put him on your birth certificate as your primary heir, I will cut you out of the family trust entirely. The Reed bloodline and property in Beacon Hill stay within direct lineage. If you want my money, you keep that child at arm’s length.”
And Michael’s replies? They sickened me.
“Mom, relax. The adoption is just a formality to make Kristen happy and give the kid insurance coverage. Legally, we haven't updated the trust documents yet. He won't inherit a dime of the family estate. I’m managing it just like you wanted.”
I sat back in the chair, staring at the glowing monitor as the room seemed to tilt around me.
All those years, while Michael smiled at Noah, played catch with him in the yard, and told me he loved him as his own... behind my back, he was reassuring his mother that Noah was nothing more than an insurance policy and a legal placeholder, protecting an inheritance from a bigoted old woman.
The physical slap Patricia delivered to Noah in the ballroom was horrific, but Michael’s quiet, calculated betrayal over the last three years was infinitely worse.
He hadn't just failed to protect our son from his mother; he had actively participated in the emotional disenfranchisement of a seven-year-old child for the sake of an inheritance.

I exported every single email, saving them to a secure cloud drive and sending copies directly to my personal email.
My marriage wasn't just broken. It was built on a foundation of deceit. And I needed to make sure that Noah was legally, financially, and emotionally insulated from the entire toxic family tree.
