Chapter 5 - THE BREAKDOWN OF THE HOUSEHOLD ILLUSION

While Clara was thriving in her new environment, back at the family house, Lucas was experiencing a catastrophic collapse of his carefully curated universe.
By Tuesday evening, my phone was ringing off the hook.
I let it go to voicemail three times before finally tapping the screen on the fourth call.
“Mom! Where is she?!” Lucas’s voice blared through the speaker, frantic, angry, and utterly unhinged. “I came home from work and the house is a disaster! There’s no food in the pantry, the laundry basket is overflowing, and the babysitter agency called saying my account has been locked! What kind of game are you playing? Send my wife back right now!”
I leaned back in my leather desk chair, spinning my pen between my fingers.
“Clara is not your property, Lucas. She is an adult human being who chose to leave a toxic environment where she was being unappreciated and abused,” I said evenly.
“Abused?! Are you out of your mind?!” Lucas shrieked. “I didn't hit her! I provided for her! I put a roof over her head! She has a car, she has clothes—what more does a woman want?!”
“She wants a partner, Lucas. Not a master,” I replied coldly. “And if you think you can survive a single week managing the home, the children, and your own life without her carrying 100% of the mental and physical load, then I suggest you roll up your sleeves. Because she isn't coming back.”
“You’re ruining my marriage!” he yelled.
“Your marriage was already dead, Lucas. You killed it the day you stopped seeing your wife as a person and started seeing her as a household appliance.”
I hung up the phone before he could scream another curse word.

I blocked his number for the rest of the evening.
Because I knew what was coming next. The anger would fade, panic would set in, and the spoiled, helpless boy I had failed to discipline properly would finally have to face the music.
