Chapter 6 - The Tables Turn

The forensic audit didn't just uncover the trust fund forgery; it opened a Pandora’s box of financial malpractice.

Richard Vance’s investigators discovered that over the previous two years, Brandon had siphoned thousands of dollars from various family accounts—including funds left in a memorial account by Arthur for community charities—to cover personal debts and high-risk investments that had gone sour.

When the full report landed on Claire’s kitchen table on a cold Tuesday in mid-January, the illusion finally shattered completely.

Claire called me at 6:00 AM, sobbing uncontrollably.

“Mom... please... can I come over?” she choked out.

“You don’t have to ask, sweetheart. Come right now.”

An hour later, Claire walked through my front door carrying two suitcases and holding Lily and Owen by the hand. Her face was bruised with exhaustion, and her eyes were swollen from crying.

She collapsed into my arms in the entryway, holding onto me so tightly I could feel her whole body shaking.

“I didn't know, Mom,” she wept against my shoulder. “I swear I didn't know. He told me he was just managing our investments. He locked me out of the online accounts. When the bank investigators came to the house yesterday... everything came out. He lost our savings in bad crypto trades. He was planning to force you to sell this house to bail him out.”

I held my daughter tightly, stroking her hair, while Lily and Owen buried their faces in my coat, scared and confused.

“You’re safe now, Claire,” I whispered. “You and the kids are home. We’re going to fix this together.”

That afternoon, Claire filed for divorce, backed by Richard Vance’s ironclad documentation of financial fraud, asset concealment, and emotional abuse. When Brandon was served divorce papers along with a criminal summons for forgery and wire fraud at his office, his controlled, arrogant facade finally crumbled into absolute panic.

He tried calling Claire fifty times in one day. He tried calling me, but our numbers were blocked. He even sent Donna to my house to plead our “family honor,” but when Donna walked up my driveway and saw a “No Trespassing” sign posted beside the porch light, she turned around and got back into her car without ever knocking.
