PART 2: THE SECRET INSIDE RICHARD VOSS'S PHONE CALL

The nursery felt smaller after the phone call.

Caleb stood motionless beside the crib.

His carefully crafted smile was gone.

For the first time since I'd arrived, he looked genuinely nervous.

Not because of the recording.

Not because I'd witnessed his behavior.

Something else had happened.

Something bigger.

I continued rocking Noah gently against my shoulder.

The baby had finally stopped crying.

His tiny body relaxed as he drifted back toward sleep.

Mia watched him silently.

The longing in her eyes nearly broke my heart.

Caleb cleared his throat.

"We should all get some sleep."

Nobody moved.

Nobody answered.

His gaze shifted to Mia.

"Come upstairs."

The words sounded simple.

But I saw the way Mia immediately tensed.

Like a prisoner hearing an order.

"No."

The answer surprised everyone.

Including Mia herself.

Caleb blinked.

"What did you say?"

Slowly, my daughter stood.

Her hands trembled.

Tears still stained her cheeks.

But something had changed.

Maybe it was seeing someone finally witness the truth.

Maybe it was hearing Noah cry while being denied the chance to comfort him.

Or maybe she was simply exhausted from carrying fear every day.

"No."

She repeated it louder.

The room went silent.

Caleb stared at her.

A dangerous calm settled across his face.

Then he laughed softly.

A laugh without warmth.

"You don't mean that."

"I do."

His eyes narrowed.

"Mia."

"No."

The single word seemed to hit him harder than a scream.

For years, he had controlled every conversation.

Every decision.

Every outcome.

And suddenly, he wasn't.

Then my phone vibrated.

A notification.

Without thinking, I glanced down.

A local news alert flashed across the screen.

The headline made my stomach drop.

VOSS FOUNDATION UNDER FEDERAL INVESTIGATION.

I immediately looked at Caleb.

His expression told me everything.

He knew.

The phone call from his father.

The panic.

The fear.

It wasn't about me.

It wasn't about Noah.

It wasn't even about Mia.

It was about that headline.

I clicked the article.

The first few paragraphs painted a troubling picture.

Anonymous financial records.

Missing charity funds.

Questionable transfers.

Federal investigators.

Search warrants.

Millions of dollars unaccounted for.

The Voss family empire was suddenly under scrutiny.

And judging by Caleb's reaction, the situation was far worse than the public knew.

"You should probably read this," I said.

I turned the screen toward Mia.

Caleb stepped forward immediately.

"Give me that."

His voice snapped through the room.

I pulled the phone back.

"No."

The anger in his eyes intensified.

Mia looked between us.

Then she took the phone herself.

The moment she started reading, all color drained from her face.

"What is this?"

Caleb didn't answer.

"Caleb."

Still nothing.

My daughter scrolled further.

Then further.

Her hand began shaking.

Finally she looked up.

"These accounts..."

Silence.

"They're in my name."

The room froze.

I stared at her.

"What?"

Mia looked horrified.

"The charity accounts."

She swallowed hard.

"Several of them are registered under me."

A terrible realization settled over the room.

Months earlier, Caleb had repeatedly asked Mia to sign paperwork.

Documents she barely read.

Forms he insisted were routine.

Tax filings.

Business records.

Charitable registrations.

At the time she trusted him.

Now she understood.

Her signature was everywhere.

Caleb stepped closer.

"Mia, listen to me."

She backed away.

"No."

His voice softened.

Manipulative.

Careful.

"The lawyers can explain everything."

"What lawyers?"

"The lawyers helping us."

Us.

The word sounded absurd.

Because suddenly it was obvious.

There was no "us."

There never had been.

There was only Caleb.

And everyone else.

Mia's eyes filled with tears.

"Did you use me?"

"No."

"Did you put those accounts in my name?"

His silence answered.

The truth landed like a bomb.

The nursery door suddenly opened.

Everyone turned.

A man stood in the hallway.

Dark suit.

Serious expression.

Federal badge clipped to his belt.

Two uniformed officers stood behind him.

For several seconds nobody spoke.

Then the man addressed Caleb directly.

"Mr. Voss."

Caleb's face turned white.

"We need to speak with you."

Noah stirred in my arms.

The baby sensed the tension.

The fear.

The uncertainty.

Caleb looked toward the window.

Toward the hallway.

Toward the stairs.

Calculating.

Searching for a way out.

The agent noticed.

"Don't."

The warning was calm.

Firm.

Final.

Mia stared at her husband.

The man she had defended.

Trusted.

Loved.

The father of her child.

And for the first time, she saw him clearly.

Not as the charming businessman everyone admired.

Not as the polished public figure who donated to hospitals and children's programs.

But as a frightened man watching his lies collapse.

Then the federal agent spoke words none of us expected.

"There's something else."

The room became silent again.

The agent opened a folder.

Removed a photograph.

And handed it to Mia.

The second she saw it, she gasped.

"What is this?"

The agent's expression darkened.

"Evidence."

My stomach tightened.

"Evidence of what?"

He looked directly at Caleb.

Then at Mia.

And finally answered.

"Evidence that someone has been secretly recording activity inside this house for nearly two years."

Every person in the room froze.

Including Caleb.

Because judging by the look on his face...

this was the first time he'd heard about it too.

And whatever was on that photograph...

May you like

it was about to reveal a secret far more dangerous than missing money.
