Chapter 3 - THE HONEYMOON CRASH

Six thousand miles away, on the sun-drenched cliffs of the Amalfi Coast, Aaron and Brittany were living inside a dream that didn't belong to them.

The balcony of their cliffside villa overlooked the impossibly blue Mediterranean. Bougainvillea cascaded down stucco walls, and a bucket of iced Dom Pérignon sat on a wrought-iron table. Brittany was draped in a designer silk robe, scrolling through her phone, watching her wedding hashtag trend among Boston’s upper-middle-class social climbers.

"Look at this, babe," Brittany chirped, sipping her mimosa. "Even the society page picked up the reception photos. Everyone is talking about the ice sculpture."

Aaron lounged on a sunbed, wearing designer sunglasses, feeling like a conqueror. He had escaped the shadow of his boring, middle-class upbringing. He was a partner in a prominent import firm, married to a stunning woman, and poised to inherit high society.

"Of course they are," Aaron said, adjusting his shades with a smirk. "The old man thought he could embarrass us with that petty $150,000 stunt. He has no idea how small his world really is. Once Vincent finalizes the corporate restructuring on Monday, we’re buying that yacht in Newport."

Right on cue, Aaron’s phone buzzed on the glass table.

He picked it up lazily, expecting a congratulatory text from Vincent or one of his groomsmen. Instead, it was an automated fraud alert from his credit card issuer.

Transaction declined: Amex Black Card.

Aaron frowned. He unlocked his phone and tapped into his mobile banking app. The screen flashed red.

Account frozen pending security review.

"Strange," Aaron muttered, sitting up. He opened his secondary business account—the operating account Vincent had set up for him as part of his incoming partnership draw.

Zero balance.

Not low. Zero.

"Babe, do you have your card?" Aaron asked, his voice losing its casual drawl. "My app is acting glitchy."

Brittany tossed her gold-trimmed Amex onto the table. "Use mine. Honestly, your dad's weird energy must be infecting your Wi-Fi or something. Did you call the bank yet?"

Aaron dialed the platinum customer service line. After three minutes of sterile elevator music, a crisp, professional female voice answered.

"Good morning, Mr. Becker. This is Premier Services. I’m calling to inform you that all lines of credit associated with your personal and corporate profiles have been placed on immediate administrative freeze under directive from Atlas Holdings."

Aaron’s heart skipped a beat. "Atlas Holdings? There’s a mistake. I’m a partner at Gallagher Imports. My father-in-law is Vincent Gallagher. You must have the wrong Aaron Becker."

"There is no mistake, sir," the representative replied evenly. "All corporate liabilities previously held by Gallagher Imports have been acquired by Atlas Holdings. Furthermore, a federal injunction has been filed regarding the fraudulent transfer of real estate assets tied to your profile. Your cards are invalid, and your current hotel reservation has been flagged for immediate settlement audit."

"What are you talking about?" Aaron shouted, standing up from the sunbed, his face draining of color. "That's impossible! Vincent would have told me!"

"You may wish to contact Mr. Gallagher," the representative said coldly. "Though I understand he is currently unavailable."

The line went dead with a sharp click.

"Aaron? What is going on?" Brittany asked, her voice sharpening as she watched the color drain from his face. "Why are you yelling?"

Before Aaron could answer, his phone rang again. It wasn't the bank. It was Vincent Gallagher.

Aaron swiped the screen frantically. "Vincent! What the hell is happening? My cards are frozen, the bank is talking about Atlas Holdings—"

"Aaron, listen to me very carefully," Vincent’s voice didn't sound like a billionaire king anymore. It sounded like a drowning man clawing at glass. It was frantic, breathless, and soaked in absolute terror. "Get on a flight back to Boston right now."

"What? Our honeymoon isn't over for another six days! What about the yacht—"

"The company is gone, you idiot!" Vincent roared through the phone. "Every warehouse has been locked by federal marshals! Our bank accounts were seized five minutes ago! Someone just bought our entire debt portfolio for pennies on the dollar and called in every note simultaneously! We are bankrupt! Do you hear me? Bankrupt!"

The phone went dead.

Aaron stood frozen on the balcony of the cliffside villa, the Mediterranean breeze suddenly feeling like ice.

Brittany stared at him, her eyes wide with sudden, sickening realization. "Aaron... what did your father do?"
