Claire wiped tears from her face.
"Ethan, please let me explain."
But Ethan felt his anger growing.
"Explain what?"
Jake looked toward Noah.
Then back to Ethan.
"Maybe not in front of the boy."
"No," Ethan snapped.
"You've already brought this into my family's life. Start talking."
Jake took a long breath.
Then reached inside the truck.
He removed an old leather folder.
Inside were photographs.
Dozens of them.
One photo slipped onto the pavement.
Ethan picked it up.
His hands froze.
The image showed a teenage Claire standing beside Jake.
Their arms around each other.
Smiling.
Happy.
Very happy.
The date in the corner read twenty years earlier.
Ethan looked at his wife.
"What is this?"

"We were together."

"Before I met you."

Noah looked confused.
"Dad?"

Claire continued.
"Then Jake disappeared."
"I didn't disappear," Jake interrupted.
"They sent me away."
Claire looked shocked.
"What?"
Jake opened the folder.
Inside were court documents.
Medical records.
Letters.
Letters that had never been delivered.
Twenty years earlier, Jake had been involved in a violent car accident.
He had suffered a severe brain injury.
Claire's father believed Jake would never recover.
He secretly intercepted every letter Jake wrote.
