Chapter 7 - The Unshakable Exit

"Yes, Alan," I said softly, my voice carrying a profound, permanent finality. "You are my son. And that is why I am not destroying you."

Alan stopped sobbing for a fraction of a second, his eyes lighting up with desperate hope. "You're... you're not?"

"No," I replied evenly. "I am simply stepping out of your way."

I bent down, picked up the stray pages of the legal agreement scattered across the floor, and neatly squared them together in my trembling hands.

"The default notice is real, Alan. Summit Holdings will exercise its legal rights to restructure the estate and recover the outstanding capital by Monday morning. Your corporate equity will be reallocated, your accounts will undergo forensic audit, and you will be stripped of the titles you didn't earn. You wanted to be a self-made man? Here is your chance to prove you can actually do it on your own."

"No! No, Mom, please!" Alan cried out, lunging forward again, but security guards—prompted by the venue manager who had watched the entire catastrophe unfold—stepped in, gently but firmly holding him back.

"Don't touch her!" Marcus, the young waiter who had brought me water earlier, suddenly stepped forward, blocking Alan’s path with quiet, unyielding respect. He looked at me with deep admiration. "Let me help you to your car, ma'am."

"Thank you, Marcus," I said.

I turned my back on the VIP table, on the stunned guests, on Melissa standing in frozen shock, and on the son who had traded his mother's love for social prestige.

As I walked down the center aisle of the grand banquet hall toward the exit doors, the room fell into a heavy, suffocating silence. Every eye followed my steps. My hands still shook, my steps were still slow and measured, but as I pushed open the heavy oak doors and stepped out into the cool night air, I felt lighter than I had in twenty years.

Behind me, I could hear Alan’s muffled, heartbroken cries echoing through the hall—the sound of an empire built on sand finally washing out to sea.
