Chapter 3 - The Weight of the Ledger

“Let’s review the menu for tonight, Evan,” I said softly, gesturing toward the stack of papers resting beside my plate. “We aren't serving checkbooks. We’re serving accountability.”

Miriam Cole slid the top folder across the polished mahogany toward him. “Open it, Evan. See what happens when you mistake a mother’s patience for weakness.”

Evan refused to touch the folder, his hands trembling at his sides. “I’m not reading garbage. Mom, cancel this. Drop these people. We can handle this privately. We’re family!”

“Family doesn't steal three million dollars from corporate escrow accounts to cover private blackjack debts in Atlantic City,” Jonathan Vance stated coldly, opening his own portfolio. “Halstead Logistics forensic audit teams completed their review at 4:00 AM today. Every single unauthorized wire transfer you initiated over the last ninety days has been cataloged, documented, and matched to your personal offshore accounts.”

Evan’s jaw went slack. “You... you audited the corporate accounts? You had no right! I’m the vice president of strategic acquisitions!”

“You were the vice president,” I corrected him, taking a slow sip of water. “As of eight o’clock this morning, your corporate credentials have been revoked, your office has been cleared out by security, and your company-issued vehicles have been repossessed.”

“You can’t do that!” Evan screamed, finally losing his temper. He lunged toward the table, his face distorted with rage. “Dad built this company for me! You’re an old woman who doesn't even know how to run a balance sheet! Without me, this whole empire will collapse!”

Before Evan could take another step, Detective Sterling stood up from her chair. The movement was smooth, practiced, and absolute. Two uniformed officers, who had been waiting quietly in the double-door foyer just outside the dining room, stepped into the light.

“Evan Halstead,” Detective Sterling said, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from her belt, “you are under arrest for grand larceny, corporate embezzlement, extortion, and physical assault resulting in severe bodily injury.”

“Mom!” Evan shrieked, his voice cracking as the officers grabbed his arms, forcing his wrists behind his back. “Mom, please! Don’t let them do this! I’m your son! HELP ME!”

I sat completely still, watching the man who had thought he could break me with a shove down the stairs.

“You should’ve done what I asked,” I whispered, repeating the very words he had thrown down at me while I lay bleeding on the marble floor.

The heavy click of the handcuffs echoed through the grand dining room like a gavel falling in a courtroom.
