Chapter 9 - The Family We Choose

Six months after the trial ended, a bright spring sun warmed the city of Riverbend.
My cast had long been removed, leaving only a faint, pale line along my forearm where the bone had fully healed, stronger than it had been before.
My mother, Diane, was sentenced to two years of probation and mandatory counseling under a residential rehabilitation program. While our relationship remained complicated, she committed herself fully to her recovery, writing me weekly letters expressing her deep remorse and supporting my path forward from a healthy, respectful distance.
On a warm Saturday morning in May, a special hearing took place in the Family Court chambers of Judge Margaret Thomas.
Sitting together around a wide mahogany table were Clara, Laura Vance, Dr. Aaron Blake, his wonderful wife Sarah—a high school art teacher with a warm laugh—and me.
Judge Thomas smiled down from her desk, holding a thick stack of legal documents.
"We are here today to finalize a very special petition," Judge Thomas said, her stern face breaking into a radiant, warm smile. "Dr. Aaron Blake and Sarah Blake have submitted a formal application for full, permanent legal adoption of Maya."
My heart did a happy flip inside my chest.
Over the past six months, Aaron and Sarah had opened their home and their hearts to me completely. We had spent weekends painting murals in my new room, going on mountain hikes, and cooking family dinners together. They had shown me what real, unconditional love looked like every single day.
"Maya," Judge Thomas asked softly. "Is it your wish to become a official member of the Blake family?"
I turned to look at Aaron and Sarah. Aaron’s eyes were brimming with tears of joy, his arm wrapped around his wife's shoulders.
"Yes, Your Honor," I said, a bright smile lighting up my face. "More than anything in the world."
Judge Thomas signed the final adoption papers with a gold pen, slamming her gavel down with a soft, joyful thump.
"Then by the power vested in me by the State, I officially pronounce you Aaron and Sarah’s daughter!"
Sarah pulled me into a fierce, warm hug, holding me close as tears of joy wet my hair. Aaron joined the embrace, wrapping his big, strong arms around both of us, holding us tight.
"Welcome home, Maya," Aaron whispered into my hair, his voice thick with emotion. "You're ours forever now."
Clara clapped her hands happily from the row behind us, throwing her arms around social worker Laura Vance.
As we walked out of the courthouse into the bright afternoon sunshine, Aaron pulled a small velvet box from his pocket and handed it to me.
I opened it. Resting inside was a beautiful gold necklace with a small pendant shaped like a bright, rising sun—matching the drawing Dr. Blake had put on my very first cast.
On the back of the gold pendant, three words were delicate engraved:
May you like
Forever Safe. Forever Loved.
I fastened the necklace around my neck, feeling the cool metal rest softly against my collarbone—a collarbone that was no longer broken, but whole.
